Does the job.
These significantly reduce flexion while providing a bit of spring back that reduces fatigue. I have not had the opportunity to test them thoroughly because my problem foot has been behaving itself, but I fully expect them to do the job and may use them preemptively if I'm going to be walking a great distance. Thin enough to fit in many shoes and the wool layer should be antimicrobial for reduced odor. One could, with a bit of determination, probably remove the wool and glue the metal to a more supportive insole.

It works!
These kept my big toe straight after I rolled the hell out of it during Jiu Jitsu. It feels awkward to walk with these but after resting up my foot and light rolling, my big toe recovered within the 2-3 month time frame for normal turf toe recovery. Good as new pretty much.

Not for my situation
Not for anybody with low arches. They are too flat for me and too thick to layer in another insole on top. Had high hopes, but don't think going to do much for me.

Low cost option for metatarsal phalangeal osteoarthritis to allow possible joint cartilage healing; ?Better than joint surgery?
Purchased these (not from Amazon) to stiffen shoe sole, decrease forefoot flex of the all black Nike Air Max shoes, which I wear daily, business & casual, for more cushioned walking, rarely jogging and very little required long term maintenance (polishing, cleaning, etc.).Given marked thinning of the 1st metatarsal phalangeal joint (osteoarthritis, medical jargon: hallux limitus/rigidus), I was looking for a thin sole insert which would serve as additional protection to reduce flexion of the 1st metatarsal phalangeal joint while walking, working, etc. so as to allow healing (hopefully) of the cartilage [which Nutrasense glucosamine+chondroitin (US/Canada sourced, NOT China like most), as documented in both the GAIT Trial and as I have seen both personally and for many clients].This is a much more appealing option than vastly more expensive specialty shoes, much less surgical replacement of the joint with a Futura Primus 3rd generation implant arthroplasty, with all the huge associated costs and risks with guaranteed lack of original joint healing (after being surgically removed). They 11 size inserts were a tight fit, lengthwise, in Nike size 11.5 shoes, due the extensions of the felt beyond the ends of the flat spring steel inserts. This additional length, once carefully forced into position, both felt ends curved up a little, worked. The felt serves to keep the inserts stable under the OEM Nike insert, placed back in the shoes over these inserts.I normally keep the Nike Air Max shoe laces tied (day-in, day-out) so that I can take then off and then back on easily using a shoe horn (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003WNA1AG) which I always keep in a pants pocket, thereby offering the best of both worlds, laces for best fit & still loafer convenience.Given the extra thickness, I did have to loosen and retie the laces to avoid the shoes with inserts being too tight, especially over my relatively high arches. However, the length of laces used before the knot changed very little.I have worn the shoes with these inserts, without many breaks the first night and for two work days since and they "seem" to be forming or at least my feet are adapting without great difficulty. They definitely markedly reduce the forefoot flex of the Nike Air Max shoes; precisely my goal in trying them (combined with not having to improvise myself, lower cost and thinner than all the other options I found). The hallux rigidus only becomes problematic with repeated long-stride fast walking, which I have been avoiding since figuring out what the joint problem was.It will take many months to see how this approach works for possibly reducing the hallux rigidus issue, potentially allowing some healing and recovery of the cartilage of both the distal 1st metatarsal and proximal 1st phalangeal bones. The only way to judge efficacy will be symptoms, external joint anatomy and possible repeat comparative X-Ray in 6 to 12 months.
