A direct box, or DI, like Post Audio's DIB-1 allows the connection of any unbalanced audio signal, usually an electric guitar, bass or keyboard to a balanced XLR input, usually on a mixer. Although the DIB-1 will actually also work in the other direction, for instance connecting your low impedance output, such as a microphone into a high impedance input, like a guitar amplifier. You can connect all kinds of audio signals like guitars, keyboards, Hi-Z microphones, outboard signal processors and even the high-powered speaker output from an amplifier. The DIB-1 also enables you to tap off the signal from a guitar or bass guitar and pass the signal through the parallel output to your on-stage amplifier without affecting the original sound. This can eliminate the need for miking the guitar amplifier, which in many cases is preferable, especially with bass guitar. The low frequencies produced by bass are difficult to mic either live or in the studio, so using a DI box is almost always preferable. Besides its most common uses in recording and live sound, you will find that the Post Audio DIB-1 is useful for solving all kinds of other problems that may come up with your PA system, monitor system, karaoke or DJ system, such as level matching or ground loops.
