The Airplane's last studio flight in the 1970's
Not counting the 1989 one-shot reunion album, this was the last studio album by Jefferson Airplane's core lineup. Featuring classic numbers like "Trial By Fire" and "Milk Train", the band was showing no signs of wear before the implosion that ended the group after the tour dates that followed this album's release. Oh and the original album cover folded into a stash box for your weed.

A Rare Classic
Long John Silver is a true classic. It was released originally during a time of great turmoil in the United States and expresses in the inimitable Airplane style both the frustration and anger as well as a raw vivaciousness that had really broken through the surface of American society. It was a time in many ways similar to our own. It was the last ful year of the disastrous War in Vietnam, it was an election year which ended unbelievably in a victory for Republican candidate Richard Nixon in spite of the Watergate break-in and cover-up which also happened that year. The song Son of Jesus also raised the issue of Jesus having offspring thirty years before the Da Vinci Code.It seems to me that a US re-release of this album might be very well timed, but in the mean time, I am grateful for this French version although the sound quality does not come up to the level it could if it had been remastered from something closer to the original master tapes.

The climax of their first career
Along with Bark this collectors album comes with its original Grunt packaging carefully reproduced for CD. Recorded in a dark time for Jefferson Airplane, as they realised they were no longer working together with the same aims. There are certain Gnostic overtones to Paul Kantner's writing here with Son Of Jesus predating the claims of The Holy Blood and the Holy Grail. In fact, religion seems to replace revolution as a focus for much of this record. As with Bark the playing and production are heavier and murkier than earlier Airplane. Eat Starch Mom, a glorious reaction to political correctness, by the ever sarcastic Grace Slick, ends the album it true style with its rock heavy wah-wah driven guitar.
