Great Book.
I am a theology student and read this book for a class on Covenants. The book does an excellent job of explaining the origins and practices of a Blood-Covenant, becoming "Blood Brothers" and how blood has been used the world over for centuries in regards to all humankind and not just in the biblical era.The language is a little hard to follow and is from the journals of an 1800's theologian so be prepared to encounter language like you would in the King James Bible (which is why I gave it only 4 stars). The examples are ubiquitous so you get the extent of what he is saying about it being a world-wide phenomena so it can get boring at times, but one can easily skim when they want. Better too many examples and cases than not enough.A rough read but great at explaining the act of Blood-Covenants and its origin.

Kindle edition lacks hieroglyphs
The original paper book gets a grade of A+++. This book by Henry Clay Trumbull (1830-1903) is a timeless masterpiece still being quoted today. But the Kindle edition gets a grade of "Incomplete". The excellence of the original paper edition comes in part from its illustrations of the original Egyptian hieroglyphs in line with the author's descriptive text so that the reader can get a good understanding not only of what Trumbull is saying, but also the original Egyptian author. Very sadly the Kindle edition lacks these hieroglyphs. We can understand that, of course, because who writes in hieroglyphics these days except for perhaps a handful of extremely technical books. In lieu of the hieroglyphs, the Kindle edition provides the statement "(inline illustration)" at the place where the hieroglyph would occur. So we are left empty-handed in our understanding. It would be great if the Kindle edition could bring these handful of hieroglyphs into the text or at least include an appendix with photos.

A classic reference
The Blood Covenant is a classic from the previous century. It is very detailed, and not really a book to just read and enjoy, but more a reference book that is well docummented. The author traces the practice of blood covenant from all over the world, both the ancient and modern. His thesis is that man is hungry for a binding covenant or contract with God, and this covenant is fulfilled in the New Covenant of the Blood of Christ. Good material.

Critical for deeper understanding of the Bible
You should read this if you want to understand more about the blood covenant. First hundred plus pages are about instances of the blood covenant in cultures around the globe. After that Trumbull turns his attention more to what will directly help you understand the Bible on a deeper level.
