The entire story is great
Tremendous story of a court lady in old Japan that I thought ended on a very sad note. One of my favorite Japanese books this year by far.

Life near the imperial palace in Heian Kyo.
The fascinating autobiography of a highborn woman in Japan at the end of the 12th and beginning of the 13th centuries. Her live revolved completely around the court until she became a nun and started going on distant pilgrimages. She gained some independence then, but had really been at the mercy of men before. Some loved her, like the Emperor Go-Fukakusa and others, some just used her. It is interspersed with poems, like all women's writings of the period.

... first borrowed this book from the school library and loved it so much that I wanted my own copy
I first borrowed this book from the school library and loved it so much that I wanted my own copy. The main character Lady Nijo was quite scandalous for her time. She lived a life full of romance, heartache, and adventure. I definitely advice people to read her diary.

The translation is 5-stars but the book paper and print job is not.
This purchase was a replacement for my worn-out original copy. The translation is 5-stars but the book paper and print job is not.

Perhaps the translation could have been better...
It's an intriguing read, but a little difficult to get into.
