Distilled is best because there will be less buildup, especially if you have hard water. (Don't use tap water with water softener in it.) **Q: is this a cold diffuser and not a heat diffuser as I know that heat destroys some of the essential oil components?** A: I've had a couple of these for about a year and while initially, they did not heat up the water, they now do. The water is quite warm which is exactly what you don't want with essential oils. I wouldn't buy it again. **Q: Is it also an air purifier** A: No. But it is also an ionizer. The diffuser doesn't heat up and it puts negatively charged ions into the air and helps with bacteria and moods etc. There isn't a filter. I really like this for a beginner diffuser, helped my household stop coughing at night and i like to put couple drops of thieves essential oil and man my home smells good! Hope this helps **Q: How does one clean this diffuser?** A: It is very easy to clean. Just rinse with warm water and I wipe it dry with a paper towel or napkin.
