"Hilarious" --The Times (U.K.) Families clash and classes collide in this brilliant British comedy When a shotgun wedding forces two families together, the stage is set for hilarity and heartache. The working-class Simcocks and middle-class Rodenhursts are from different ends of the social spectrum but equally snobbish. Their fortunes forever linked, they meet at various functions: weddings, a christening, a funeral, and even the crowning of Miss Frozen Chicken (U.K.). Fueled by pride, jealousy, alcohol, and lust, each event (or "do") is a calamity in the making. David Jason (Only Fools and Horses, A Touch of Frost) leads a stellar ensemble cast in this acclaimed British comedy based on books by David Nobbs (The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin). Set in a small Yorkshire town where secrets are impossible to keep, it pokes fun at class distinctions while creating genuine, believable characters. Reflecting the comedic pedigree of its creator and cast, each episode blends humor and pathos with sharp writing and surprises. Winner of several British Comedy Awards, A Bit of a Do holds a special place among classic Britcoms. Also starring David Thewlis (Harry Potter, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas), Stephanie Cole (Doc Martin), Gwen Taylor (Barbara), Nicola Pagett (Upstairs, Downstairs), and Michael Jayston (Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy).

A Bit of a Do at a Bit of a Do!!
We're really loving this series. Its great to see the familiar faces of David Jason and Stephanie Cole. Having enjoyed watching artists such as Jason and Stephanie Cole since the 1970's its great seeing Col'es range and versatility and in this series she shows that artistry. (We always preferred her over Dench). There are probably many individuals who might not enjoy this series. The concept of this series is quite brilliant in that all the action, gossip, bad behavior, choices and other life changing decisions take place at "do's" such as weddings, funerals etc. The characters, change, progress, grow and allow us to see them take shape. We love that this series is dialogue as opposed to the cacophony, noise, thundering sound and meaningless small talk and violence of so many series. 100%.

Not Very Entertaining
I collect British sitcoms. This one left me cold. Many of the staple actors in other sitcoms are present here. I found the writing to be, well, just boring, which made the characters boring to me. Not a lot of energy in this series. I know that British comedy is a dry wit. But this one is drier and sadder than most.

Not what I expected. The families are so dysfunctional ...
Not what I expected. The families are so dysfunctional and I pray that this does not reflect the real world and if it does, no wonder were in trouble.

Brilliantly British!!!
David Jason is just superb! Very much in the vein of 'them and us' and taking the proverbial micky out of everything. Not to be missed.

Nostalgic British Drama
This is classic British drama at its best. Takes you back in time to the land of enchantment and British pomp and pagentry. Aristocraticly beautiful with excellent screenplay and beautiful cinematography depicting the beautiful English countryside. Ohhh, it just totally takes your breath away. And, the lead characters are just absolutely marvellous. I grew up on this back in the day when I was a college student in London in the 90s'. I just couldn't get enough of it. Splendidly beautiful. Brilliant...!!!

A Bit of A Dry Comedy!
I remember watching "A Bit of A Do" many years ago. It is a dry comedy, with some great classic moments. I am not sure if it has aged perfectley but I still found it funny. Each episode is set around a "party" of "do" with the same characters. Stephanie Cole is great. David Jason is always great. "Neville" is my fav character. Got to go now, I need to go to "a bit of a do" !

A Bit of a Disappointment
I often buy Britcoms sight-unseen and loved David Jason in Fools and Horses, and Open All Hours. This was a bit of a let down. Interesting, but not funny. Amusing maybe? I haven't laughed yet although I see the humor in human fickleness.

Definitely a Do to watch!
I watched the original series on TV but missed an awful lot of it so it was quite a treat when this complete series suddenly popped up.And even after all these years it was still a treat to watch especially with so many great actors in it especially Gwen Taylor and Stephanie Cole, not forgetting David Jason. It is a lovely gentle comedy all held together by the functions that two families attend over the years and the goings on at these "Do's"Not every one's cup of tea nowadays but a wonderful reminder of gentler days.

Just the job, tickety boo (but why the ad breaks?)
I watched A Bit of a Do with my Mum as a kid and really enjoyed it. When I found this DVD of the complete series at such a bargain price I snapped it up, and looked forward to rewatching it. The series itself is every bit as good as I remembered: brilliantly written and superbly acted by a wonderful cast. Nicola Pagett stands out for me as the real star of the show. Fun too to see a very young David Thewlis in the first series. There is also a nice bonus - the original Yorkshire TV one-off comedy drama "Dogfood Dan and the Camarthen Cowboy" (later adapted into a BBC sitcom) also written by the brilliant David Nobbs. The other bonus features are not great - a rather insipid interview with Nicola Pagett from a chat show, and a brief interview from what I think must be Yorkshire TV's Calendar show with David Nobbs, which has very little to do with A Bit of a Do. That said, nice to see snippets of TV from a bygone era...What is odd though, as some other reviewers have commented, is that this DVD has been released with the gaps for the ad breaks still in it! I have to say, I don't really mind that - it fuels the nostalgia factor for me (in fact, I was half tempted to find some 1980s ad breaks on YouTube and watch them at the appropriate junctures) but I can see it being annoying for some. It seems to me a very lazy effort. Oh, I shouldn't have said that, not today....

Brilliant - Bit of A Do
We saw most of the original episodes of Bit if A Do and managed to tape 10 out of 13 of them, but we only had them added to ends of films we taped, to fill the tape up. This was a mistake as when you want to watch one you have to run the tape to the end. Anyway, that propmpted me to purchase the boxed series 1 & 2 set. They are absolutely the best. Sarterical and up to date comedy even though the series is over 10 years old. It could have been written yesterday. Each Bit of a Do episode is an occasion that most people would at some time or other attended. And the antics will have happened at some do somewhere. It is so well written you find humour not just in the lines but in the facial expressions o the actors, all of whome have done a wonderful job.I'm really surprised that it has not been back on TV.It's well worth the money.

excellent very english well observed comedy
This is a comedy you would only find in england, observed around those awful "do's" which everyone dreads and feels obliged to attend, but secretly loathes and loathes everybody else because they are snobs, boring, insufferable, unable to help getting drunk etc etc. I love this series and think it is much underrated. From the "tickedy boo" barman to the wonderful David Jason (who steals the show as he always does) and the equally wonderful Gwen Taylor who has a poignant role as a cheated wife with little self esteem who loses her dad...but regains her strength and dignity. Wonderful wonderful highly recommend.

Wonderful
I absolutely loved this programme when it was on television. I had the first series on video. Bit useless now! Great to find both series together on DVD. I have the book, too, and that's just as funny. Great cast, and every episode is a gem. Wonderful.
