Detailed history of civil war
This book is mainly for readers interested in the details of recent Nicaraguan history. Most of the text is about the civil war of the 1980s. But there are also gems here and there, details about Nicaraguan life and society. Excellent writing style.

Biased toward the Sandinistas.
Along with the many other books about Nicaragua, this is an OK read. The author Davis has a bias toward the Sandinistas. He equates the Contras with a bunch of thugs (some may have been) and as tools of the United States. If we are to believe Davis, the FSLN were so popular that they would win an election. In 1984 they did win the election, but lost in 1990. If they were so popular, then why did they lose. However, other than the bias, I learned some facts from this book. There were some interesting observations in here about the history of this small country. If one wants to get a better picture of life under the Sandinistas, then one should read Steve Kinzer's book Blood of Brothers. This is a more fair account of what life in Nicaragua was like under the FSLN regime. Kinzer is even a New York Times reporter. His reporting was more even handed.
