So far, so good. It detects water and I like the design.
I haven't had it long but so far, so good. It works, even if I just lay a wet finger across the sensors, and I like the design. In case the description or other reviews haven't made it obvious, it comes assembled as a single unit but the bottom of the plastic box - the side with the sensors - separates so you can either stand the entire unit on the floor, sensors down, or detach the sensor plate to put it where water might be and keep the larger box elsewhere. I should point out that 'elsewhere' in this case means up to about 6 feet away because the two parts are connected by wire, but this is helpful because the main unit is NOT waterproof.I was disappointed by this at first because I needed to put it under the trap under my kitchen sink and any water would drip onto and potentially through the non-waterproof innards before it gets to the sensors, but since the two parts can be separated it's not an issue. The main unit has keyholes on the back so I was able to easily mount it to the side wall inside the cabinet under the sink.On that note, I do have one small complaint. The box the unit comes in has a template printed on the inside that you ought to be able to cut out and then use to mark where the holes should go for screws if you're going to mount the main unit. Unfortunately, the template is not to scale so other than the fact that it says the holes/screws need to be 2 5/16 inches apart, it's useless. On the other hand, if the template hadn't been there I wouldn't be complaining about it, I would have just measured between the keyholes on the back of the unit and mounted it without a template...like I did. So, a very minor complaint.I know it detects water so I just need to wait to see whether it lasts and whether it really does beep to indicate when the battery is low as advertised. Fingers crossed.Edit - 26 Feb 2018: It definitely works. A leak started exactly where I expected it might and the thing started screaming! It was so loud my cat hid at the other end of the house until I pulled the battery. Still no idea whether it also goes off when the battery is low. That update will have to wait.Edit - 7 Nov 2019: It still works. I know because I just tested it to see if the battery was dead. It's still using the original battery I installed two years ago and I should probably change it once a year like I do with my smoke detectors but I really want to find out whether the low battery warning works. Maybe I'll be able to comment on that one of these days...or years.Edit - 2 Sep 2020: I can finally report that the low battery warning works. I was going nuts for a couple days trying to figure out which of my smoke alarms was chirping. Didn't make any sense, especially since the chirping was 100% consistent but every 25 1/2 minutes. Don't ask me how I know that detail... I wouldn't mention this but I figure it might spare someone else the same maddening experience. Remember: one chirp every 25 1/2 minutes (though your mileage may vary). The original battery lasted nearly 3 years even though it had spent some time alarming (see my 2018 edit). I replaced the battery and laid one finger across the sensors and it worked immediately. Still going strong!

Works great, but my drip pan shorted it out at first. I added a DIY LED alarm to it
A number of reviewers responded to my question about whether this device would still give a low battery warning if it went off while we were away for the weekend. Their replies convinced me that I needed to tweak the device a bit.For less than $8, I bought 10 bright LED lights on eBay. I uncrimped the top of a dead 9V battery to get that snap-on thing that attaches to the top of a 9V battery. Then I soldered everything together, leaving a gap so that it will take a water leak to complete the circuit and light up the LED.The alarm itself has bare leads on the bottom that shorted out on the aluminum pan that's under the water heater. I had some square-cross-section 1/8 inch plastic rod, so I cut a couple of lengths off of it and glued them to the bottom of the alarm. This gave the alarm a lot more stability, in addition to preventing the short-circuit. To hold the cut wires that make the "gap" in the DIY LED alarm in place, I cut another short length from the 1/8 inch rod and glued the wires to this rod so that they can't short out against each other. Obviously, you have to leave some of the wire unglued or the glue will insulate the whole thing and prevent the alarm from ever going off.I glued a couple of wine corks to the top of the alarm, to hold the 9V battery for my DIY LED alarm in place. Then I put the alarm in with the water heater. I clipped my homemade LED alarm to the 9V battery and slid the 9V into place between the corks. As the pictures show, it works perfectly. The LED vendor assured me that a 9V battery will "easily" power this bright LED for at least three or four days.If I get a low battery alert from the alarm, I will replace both 9V batteries.

Exactly what i was looking for
Inexpensive but precisely what I need. I have a couple areas that are susceptible to water overflow and possible water damage. Having a warning is all I need and this device should work. I don't know the battery life and it could be a little louder but all told it should work fine for my needs.

Simple and Effective
The design and easy use of this device makes it, IMHO, worth its weight in gold!Put in the battery, put it in the place where there is the potential for a water leak.In my case, it is a closet in which we have out water heater, There is a 6-foot or so wire with a sensor that you place face down on the floor. The sensor has two leads. If there is a leak, the water, by touching both leads, closes the circuit, and the alarms begins to sound. Since we don't regularly use the closet in question, if that water heater did begin to leak, it would take a good while before we noticed, and after a lot of water damage had been done. For a modest investment, this Water Alarm gives you a GREAT return on that investment!

Super loud alarm, buying more!
These water leak detectors work great! The batteries are easy to install and test, these are really really loud. I installed two in each bathroom, one under each sink and one behind each toilet. I also added one in the metal water pan that sits underneath the water heater in the garage, as soon as it touched the metal pan though it went off. Just place a piece of paper towel underneath the detector first, simple fix. To test this I poured some water into to the pan to simulate a leak, the paper towel soaked up the water and the alarm sounded immediately. Purchasing 8 more for the rest of the house. You can't be to careful when it comes to a water leak.
