Product description It took 10 years and more tummy-tuck coverage than the average fan might have wanted, but Wilson Phillips is back, its taut three-part harmonies intact. Concept album California couldn't have been a difficult record to make--the daughters of Beach Boy Brian Wilson (Carnie and Wendy) and the Mamas and the Papas' John and Michelle Phillips (Chynna) grew up on these canyon-deep, left coast-leaning hits. Surprisingly, though, it's not their parents' songs--"Monday Monday" and "In My Room" among them--that Wilson Phillips make soar. Instead, they stomp off with the Eagles' "Already Gone" (covered twice here, once as a hidden track) and opener "You're No Good," the Linda Ronstadt classic, skewing the songs in their favor, making what was once rich and earthy seem pop-sweet. The sun-drenched perkiness pervading these tracks may be standard Wilson Phillips, but credit legendary producer Peter Asher with maintaining a sandcastle-smooth sound throughout. --Tammy La Gorce .com It took 10 years and more tummy-tuck coverage than the average fan might have wanted, but Wilson Phillips is back, its taut three-part harmonies intact. Wilson phillips-2004 album
i have been a fan of wilson phillips for a long time. they are a kind of guilty pleasure for me. their music makes me feel good and i the songs are things i can relate to.i bought this album recently and i liked it a lit. when i did buy it i thought it was a cd of brand New music that is until i got it and heard it and loved it.they do cover songs by fleetwood mac,''you can go your own way'' which is a very good song. they picked music from the 60's era from bands like the Beach boys and the youngbloods. songs most know of but they give insight into what wilson phillips likes and what influenced them as well. any fan of wilson phillips would like this album and any fan of the bands they cover on here would like this album as well. the girls sound great and this was their first cd since they had gotten back together and it shows they still are wonderful singers.

California Here I Come!
Welcome Back Wilson Phillips! It's so good to have these talented women back. This concept CD of covers from and about California's more golden past is a pure joy. This is the perfect beach CD; one to lift your spirits, take you down memory lane (if you're old enough) and re-introduce some classic songs. As with any cover that goes in a new direction from the original, I was taken aback at first with a few of their choices, but was just as quickly taken in by them.Overall the CD has a stripped down, basic feel to it. No high tech synthesizers and efffects, just pure voices and instruments (quite a bit of strings). What a relief WP didn't feel the need to 'update' these songs with sonic acrobatics. Their interpretations however are startling and catchy. "California", "Go Your Own Way", "Already Gone" and "Doctor My Eyes" are the standouts in my opinion. If you're looking to hear tight harmoniesa and stripped down honest to goodness music then you should pick up California right away!

Great and getting better
WIlson Phillips is one of my favorite girl bands but CAlifornia is not my favorite W.P. album. That honor would go to Dedicated. California does have the WIlson Phillips blend of rocking harmony though. California is a fun listen and will leave you with an upbeat impression. The percussion is solid and well measured. The harmonies of the girls is spot on without gaps or missed notes. Even the back ups of acoustic and electric guitar is well matched to the ladies voices. Favorite track is an update and Rocky version of the Mamas and Papas classic, Monday Monday. Most replayed is a rocking version of Dance Dance Dance. Typical of WIlson Phillips, the album is a pleasing mix of newer tunes and 60s classics. Fans of W.P. Will love it. Not a fan yet? Give California a spin. You will soon be sold on WIlson Phillips.

Ah California!
Wilson Phillips are truly California girls with music in their blood and genes. Chynna Phillips, the daughter of John Phillips from the legendary Mamas and Papas and Brian Wilson's daughters, Carnie and Wendy Wilson. They are second generation singers.Wilson Phillips was a musical trio with harmony in check. This compilation is really their homage to their home state of California and their tribute to songs that have inspired and influenced them.

California Dreaming? Keep Dreaming!
I was somewhat disappointed by this album. Like most "tribute" albums, the inherent problem is that if you remake a true "classic" song and you don't change the arrangement, then why re-record it? And, if you do change it dramatically, then more often than not you'd rather hear the original. The Bangles Hazy Shade of Winter comes to mind as the rare exception to a re-make improving upon the original . . . that doesn't happen with the songs on this album. The harmonies are, as always, terrific, but there isn't one song on here that really jumps out and makes me say "well done!" You're No Good is just that . . . no good.I thought that Wendy and Carnie's Hey Santa! album was a better album . . . remakes of songs that have been sung a hundred times, but they still sounded fresh and new when the girls sang them. The songs on California sound like the girls made them their own, but not necessarily in a positive way. After hearing the album, I know I won't listen to it again . . . I'll take all the existing artists, burn my own cd of the their versions and have a "greatest hits" that is really great!

This CD makes me strangely happy...
I can't explain why, but this CD really works for me. It's comforting. It takes songs I have always loved and remakes them in a way that, while perhaps not novel, brings out the best of the original in a way that celebrates the sound of Wilson Phillips. And when I'm having a bad day, listening to "You can go your own way" is the perfect recipe for solace.

I bought for a single song....
I sometimes buy a CD for a single song and am pleasantly surprised when I find another two or three cuts I like. I listened to this CD before adding it to my music library on my computer, and only copied the song I bought it for.

Sounding Great Ladies!
I have to confess that it was seeing the film Bridesmaids that reminded me about Wilson Phillips and how much I liked their debut album, way back in 1990. Hold On, Release Me, Eyes Like Twins and Reason to Believe are all great songs (they all are!) I bought a second hand copy of their debut and really loved listening to these songs again after 20 years (where did the time go?) I did a bit of delving on the internet to see what the girls had been up to lately and discovered this album, California. I watched the video for Go Your Own Way on YouTube and absolutely loved it. As the title demands, the girls absolutely Go Their Own Way on this track, slowing things down and introducing some gorgeous harmonies. Love it. Other stand out tracks on this covers album are Old Man (Neil Young classic), Already Gone and Doctor My Eyes. This is a great album to put on the CD player and just relax to. Conjures up images of long hot summers and lost love. Would definitely recommend this album to anyone who loves harmonies and great tunes. Give it a go!
