Yes, the gate can stay open. The plexiglass is not very thick but is very sturdy and durable. I highly recommend this product. My dog loves it because he can see all around from inside it.

Hard plastic (clear plexiglass). Very sturdy and durable. It will not rip. I highly recommend this product.

Q: For the bunny owners, does the hay escape from the bottom or is it contained?

Yes, hay will spill out because there is no floor/bottom only sides. You could put it on a piece of cardboard or wood to contain the hay.

Q: up to how many pounds does it hold? Since it does say for small to medium sized pets

Our puppy is about 20 lbs at 9 months old. We don't expect her it get much bigger ... maybe 25 lbs at max. While she does jump up on it to put her front paws on the top of it, she hasn't jumped over it at this point. She does move it around when she tries to escape from it, but so far she hasn't gotten out unless I forget to close both the latches. If you plan to place it on a wood or tile floor, it will move and change shapes if your dog is bumping into it.
