I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS THERMOSTAT - UPDATE After more than one year using this thermostat, this is the best I have found for operating a two stage air conditioner. Read below for more details. If you live in a hot climate and have a two stage AC, this is the thermostat for you! Your house will be more comfortable and you will save money. It beats the fancy "smart" thermostats hands down! CORRECTION FROM ANOTHER REVIEW First of all, I want to correct some misinformation from another review. One reviewer indicated that you could not illuminate the backlight without changing the current state of the thermostat. Either that problem has been corrected or never existed. If you press either of the set point up or down buttons, the backlight illuminates and the set point does not change. A second push while the backlight is still on will change the set point. Very convenient. I am delighted with this thermostat. HISTORY OF MY STRUGGLES FINDING A GOOD THERMOSTAT Ever since replacing my HVAC system nine years ago with a two stage heat and cooling system, I have struggled to find a decent thermostat that does a good job managing the two different stages. It is nearly impossible (even when reading the installation manual) to discern the logic used by the thermostat's algorithm concerning when it will run on first or second stage cooling for example. Furthermore the installation manuals explanation of the setup options don't really explain what the actual hysteresis will be. Some have a “delta temperature” setting where the choices are typically 0.5 or 1.0 or 1.5 deg F. These choices are too granular and don't work for many homes with good installation. In my case, on hot summer days the Braeburn 5390 thermostat that was installed with my system would generally run far too long (usually on high cooling stage) before finally shutting off 25 to 45 minutes later. Then it would remain off for 45 minutes or longer before turning on again. All this with the setup option set for 0.5 deg F, the most “sensitive.” The house was never comfortable. Early in 2024, I tried an Ecobee 3 Lite. See my full review on Ecobee. I bought it because the installation manual indicated it has a setup option to select how many cycles per hour the system should run. I set that option to the most cycles per hour allowed and it still only cycled about once per hour – running 30 min or more each time it called for cooling. It was an improvement in that it did a better job of managing the two cooling stages but still did a poor job of keeping the house in a comfortable range. Due to this, and other worse behaviors you can read about in my review, I only used it a few months this past summer. THIS THERMOSTAT WORKS GREAT Late in the 2024 summer cooling season I purchased this Honeywell FocusPro 5220D thermostat. It is perfect! Besides being simple to set up to match your system type, it has a very robust choice of options for controlling the two stages. It has separate options to control how many cycles per hour it should run when running on first or second stage. It also has two separate options for the heating stages. The default for each of these options is 3 cycles per hour but it has many more options. You don't have to guess what hysteresis or “delta-temp” to set it for because it adapts itself to your house. If you have a very well insulated house it will automatically reduce the hysteresis or temperature delta in order to cycle the appropriate number of times per hour. As expected, this means the air conditioner runs less duration and on a lower stage when the outside temperature is lower. It also does a good job of staying in first stage cooling unless absolutely necessary. My old thermostats including the Ecobee insisted on switching to high stage for a few minutes at the end of each cooling cycle when there was no reason to do so. ADDITONAL BENEFITS OVER PREVIOUS THERMOSTAT I very happy that this thermostat has battery backup (or battery primary power if your system does not have a common wire run to the thermostat). I am also happy that it does not lock up in a ridiculous “calibrating” cycle for 20 minutes every time the power goes out like the Ecobee, and that it remembers the set point when power goes out. I'm happy not to have to dig three or four levels deep into setup menus just to get it working like the Ecobee – all while standing next to the thermostat since the Ecobee it has not battery. This Honeywell can be set up while sitting in your easy chair prior to installation. It does not need WiFi or internet to operate. The Ecobee behaves very badly and refuses to operate properly without internet connection.

I've had this thermostat for MANY years and it has been great. I love the simplicity of it, and it's easy to use. It has been reliable and accurate. I have never wanted all the extra bells and whistles that a lot of the thermostats have today. I just want the ability to change the temperature for heat and cold and that's about it. I have been so pleased , so I bought another one to keep on hand in case anything ever goes wrong with the original I have. When I told my AC guy that I had bought an extra, he laughed and said, "You probably wasted your money, cause these thermostats last forever!" I will say that for its size and simplicity, I was surprised how much more they cost today. I wasn't expecting to pay over $100, but then I do realize that sometimes you truly do get what you pay for, and this thermostat is a proven winner! So, NO complaints here! I highly recommend this item!

We have a vacation home where we have to turn the Heat on and back off each time we come and go, and my elderly Dad needed something easy to read and easy to use. This one fits the bill perfectly. We set ours up for "HEAT ONLY" since we don't have A/C out there and now under the "System" heading it has: "Heat and Off ". That's it. Just like it should. No extra "Cool" setting that we don't need which only confuses the issue! When it's "Off" the display for the temperature setting disappears. When you turn it to "Heat" the display pops up on the screen again. It's very obvious when it's off and when it's on. There are 4 simple hard buttons on the front, Temp: UP/DN System: HEAT/OFF (in our scenario) and you will never need a manual once you get it installed. It couldn't be more intuitive. The display is very clear and easy to read even from a distance and the Amber Back Lighting is really nice looking and makes it easy to read in the dark. The Font size for the lower display on this one is 13 point versus 11 point on the models with the smaller screen. In other words, considerably larger and easier to read. The "Inside" and "Temperature" settings are huge and very easy to see even for me without my reading glasses... It's really easy to install and I was able to use this same model for both our 80% Furnace downstairs and the 90%+, 2-Stage Furnace upstairs. That way we can have the same one up and down. Very convenient and very versatile. It fits most other types of Furnaces too. Including ones with A/C and Heat Pumps. Auto Changeover is a nice feature that I use here at home (also a Honeywell) and love. About the only thing that makes it not perfect is that there is no way to keep the backlight on all the time like you can on the top of the line models. I have to say though, once I got used to not having it, it wasn't an issue. I'd recommend this Thermostat to anyone looking for something simple to operate with an easy to read, large display.

Perfect replacment for our old thermostat didnt need programing but needed auto changover and these work great.

If you want a rock solid non programmable digital thermostat this is it. The Honeywell focus pro 5000 has been the thermostat most stocked on HVAC service contractors trucks. I have used these thermostats to control 40 ton 2 stage heat and cool systems in commercial buildings, and used the same thermostat to control a small 1.5 ton heat pump for a bonus room. You can run 2 stages cooling, 2 stages heat. You can also just as easily set it up for a heat pump system or even a dual fuel system. Once it's programmed it's very simple to operate. The setup can be a bit daunting the first time since you scroll through abunch of number combinations but if you follow the instructions it's easy enough. You have no scheduling functions so if your looking for that you will need to pick another product in the Honeywell line. The auto changeover function is nice the only downside is it has a fixed non adjustable dead band(3F in a temperature difference to go from heat to cool or cool to heat). But if all you want is a basic thermostat with no scheduling or anything else and a nice large easy to read screen this is it. Will run of battery or if you have the C wire hooked up it can just run off or the 24V low voltage system. Battery seems to last a couple years but I would highly advise letting it run off the 24V low voltage system so you don't have to change battery's. Who cares if your thermostat functions during a power outage, the rest of the unit won't run anyways.

This was purchased after a lot of research & finding best price & return agreements on Amazon. I have a 2 stage heat 1 stage cool system for which is hard to locate a non programmable thermostat that actually utilizes the 2 stage heat. I had a professional put it in who was also performing my yearly maintenance check. I had twice found my 7 year old programmable thermostat continuing to run way above the highest set numbers. Did not want another programmable one. My local gas company does not recommend them either. I just lower the heat now if I'm leaving for several hours. I can just set the air at 80 & leave it for the summer. The back light does not come on unless you push the temp buttons & stays at the same number until the second push. However, the system button doesn't cause the light to come on - it just immediately changes which system is displayed so be careful to leave it alone. Very simple & easy to use. My winter gas bill says I saved over last year & my bill came with a reward bonus for this. I'm adding this after having the thermostat for a few months: First of all I still love this thermostat, but noticed another reviewer mentions the thermostat registers up to 3 degrees off. This appears to me to be true of mine also. However, since my other thermostats were installed by people who asked if I wanted it adjusted to exact temperature, I believe it is up to the installer (see pages 6-8 of installation manual, & page 3 of the operating manual) to mention the adjustable temperature most come with. They are set by the factory & like ovens etc. can be adjusted (usually up to + or - 3 degrees) at installation. It took a few days for me to recognize mine was registering heat lower than set & then since the AC has been on it is also registering lower than the actual temperature. I just set mine accordingly (for me that means up 2 degrees from 66 to 68 for winter & up from 80 to 81 for summer). I'm still very happy with this thermostat & coming out way ahead on my bills over the programmable thermostat.

This replaced an automatic thermostat in a house that I'll be selling soon. The old thermostat was way way off. I love auto thermostats, but I've had 3 in a row that were out of calibration and just horrible. I know how to use them, etc. But this device installed easily (less than 20 minutes), and worked perfectly immediately. I've been using it about a week. It holds the temperature I set, it reports the temperature accurately, and does exactly what you'd expect of a manual thermostat. If you're the sort of person who will really use a programmable thermostat, don't go with a cheap one. Get a really nice one. If you aren't sure you'll ever program it, don't waste your money. This thermostat is all you need. Oh, and the display is easy to read and not at all cluttered or confusing. I *think* that you are required to run through the brief setup routine that's described in the manual that comes with it before it will work. I'll put it this way, when I first turned it to "Cool," nothing happened. This may have been the compressor time-out, or it may have been waiting for me to run the setup routine. I looked in the manual and noticed that I had forgotten the routine. I did the easy steps and the compressor immediately kicked on. Don't think that's a coincidence. Not a complaint, just letting you know so you save yourself a telephone call. One last note. If your eyes just aren't what they used to be, get a magnifying glass or ask someone else to help install it. The letters, wires, and screws are, by necessity, small.
