Indian almond leaves (katappa, catappa, katappang leaves) are commonly used for conditioning betta fish but are also ideal for keeping discus, corys, gouramis, tetras, angelfish, South American dwarf cichlids and shrimp. They are rich in compounds that tend to improve fertility, health, and vigour of tropical fish. The leaves release ample amounts of tannins into the water, that have antibacterial and anti-fungal properties but it will turn the water brown. The tannins will also affect the pH value of the water (depending on the hardness of the water). Indian Almond leaves have been referred to as the Asian Breeding Secret Recipe. They provide an effective way to enhance your water parameters by creating a more natural environment for your betta. They are very simple to use and are also believed to add a medicinal affect to the water by protecting from some parasitic and fungal infections.
