MASAMUNE DATE Born in around 1567, he was an heir of Terumune Date in Yonezawa castle, Dewa province (Yamagata prefecture). He inherited his family estate at the age of 18 and subjugated most of the south Oshu only in 5 years. However, he ended up serving Hideyoshi during the subjugation of Odawara, since Hideyoshi was already about to achieve the unification of the whole country at that time. In 1600, he belonged to Tokugawa army in the battle of Sekigahara, constructed Sendai castle later, and became the first lord of Sendai domain of 620 thousands koku of rice. He lived until the era of Idemitsu, the third shogun of Edo shogunate and passed away in 1636. Because of his brilliant achievement that he cut the territory of about 1.5 million koku of rice at the young age of 23, it is said that he might have achieved the unification of the whole country if he were born 10 years earlier.
