Review I think that any blue belt that became proficient at the techniques shown would have an excellent base from which to pursue further study of BJJ, and he would be able to justify and defend his ranking against all comers. --Grapplearts.comPurple Belt Requirements is a new kind of instructional. Almost every other instructional is a long compilation of techniques, sometimes (but not always) arranged in some kind of structure, with the instructor methodically working their way through the details. In his new offering, Roy Dean takes a conceptual approach instead, where the techniques fit into an overall philosophy for purple belt, the most important element of which is the need to learn how to combine techniques into a flowing sequence. --Can Sönmez, Slideys Training LogBrown Belt Requirements: Pressure and Efficiency' is well balanced between being advanced and being accessible. Although much of it is beyond my current skill level, it provides a reference point of where I would like to get to and how to get there. This set has changed the way I practice Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and I'm glad that I purchased it. --K. Saiki

A LOT of information.
A lot of information. Sometimes moves very quickly, but it's still good overall. There are some very good techniques in here that I think are worth while learning. I haven't practiced any of the non-white belt material, but still looks legit. I have not heard him say that this is for self defense or sport BJJ, but a lot of the techniques are done in a way that would be applicable for self defense (I've seen videos on youtube of the same technique done for self defense purposes). Don't regret the purchase at all, but I would like more technical detail to make it a little more worth it. Would recommend Ribeiro's book along with this.

WRONG CONTENT ON DVD
How does a YOGA VIDEO end up on a disk in place of BJJ content I payed for?! That disk is in the purple belt section. A couple disks later in the collection were not playing at all. I’m on deployment and have no way of returning these disks anywhere near the cutoff date for returns/replacements, so I imagine I’m just screwed out of a hundred bucks. As for the content that did work, I (brown belt) have enjoyed it and have been implementing certain details into my own training as well as training I’m offering fellow service members currently deployed with me. I only wish I had the complete set that I paid for.

I bought this DVD set years back and still refer back to it regularly. The DVD structure is great. Roy is clear and to the point without over explanation or distractions which I've seen with other sets. Im a fan.

Gold mine
If you're studying Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, this is the resource you want. When you think about studying martial arts, it is amazing how many obstacles stand in the way. The material itself is demanding, but you also need a teacher. Finding someone who knows what they are doing, who has good values (not psycho), and who has the skill to teach is a very unusual combination. But this complete course in BJJ up to the black belt level excels in every category. Roy Dean's world championship in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu speaks for itself, and his demonstrations show his extensive knowledge and skills. But the instruction goes far beyond the technical. Woven throughout is a vision of personal development and self-improvement which arises naturally out of an interpretation of BJJ that is fluid, intelligent, and technical. One of the appeals of BJJ from its emergence in the original Ultimate Fighting Championships was the way in which reason and technique could overcome pure violence, and Roy's approach realizes this aspect of the art. Roy is also a master teacher with a background in media which enables him to create an endlessly interesting presentation of the material from different angles. Technical demonstration is blended with sparring sequences, clips from competitions, meditations on themes which, with the aid of background music, become artistic pieces in their own right, all to help the student learn faster and deeper. For instance, in the classroom sequences, Roy spars with his students and sometimes taps to them! Inconceivable in most formal Asian arts. But the tapping is no discredit to Roy, but quite the opposite. There is simply no doubt that he is master of the art; tapping for the students testifies to his teaching abilities and character. The series is also extremely abundant. Roy is clearly someone devoted to Jiu-Jitsu and there is information bursting from every word and every moment of the video. There is literally enough to occupy one for a lifetime, and the series represents a stunning value. While I have only made it through half the series, that is more than enough to understand its worth. It could well be that for martial arts, as for any learning endeavor, one strives not just to master the material to but to model yourself after the teacher, and you could not do better than Roy Dean.
