Q: Does it have temperature settings or is it strictly to boil? I want to use it for French Press and prefer to get water just below boiling point.

No temp settings. Boils the water if you leave it in long enough. I use it for my press also, but shut it off after temp reaches 200 degrees (as read with instant thermometer). Once you get the time it takes to get to that temp (depends on your altitude), you can get pretty consistent results.

Q: How large is pot.? Is it easy to travel with?

It holds quite a bit, so it is pretty large. I travel with a ceramic mug that fits inside it (also put my sugar and tea), so I save some space. The main thing to remember is to repack the bottom part. I have travelled thousands of miles and have never lost it.

Q: Can this hot pot be used for cooking macaroni and soups?

We have used ours for boiling eggs, but have not tried macaroni or soups. I don't see why not, but clean-up afterwards would be a concern. The lid opens quite wide, but does not get to a 90 degree angle to the kettle, so you can't scrub it like you would a regular pot and it cannot be immersed because of the built-in heating element. Once you get "particulate matter" out of the pot, you can always boil a little vinegar in it to further clean it. I recommend using it to heat the water for your pastas and soups, then use standard equipment at the stove.
