Just A Touch Off The Mark
In other reviews I have loudly sung the praises of Steven Ehrman. Although this offering is definitely worthy of purchase, it wasn't quite up to snuff. Certainly the elements were all there and the plot well stated. To me, however, it seemed the presentation was somewhat awkward and stilted. Yes, all of the characterizations were accurate but it seemed the narrative tended to sag in places and plod along unlike others I have reviewed. It definitely constitutes time well spent but doesn't qualify for 'Barn Burner' status. Keep them coming, Mr Ehrman.

This invetigation seem to on an on.
Though well written, the investigation seemed to go on and on before any point could be made. That's not to say that it was easy and the reader had the answer early on, just that there seemed to be far too many dead ends before Holmes was able to piece it together. A good story overall, but not as good as some of Mr. Ehrman's other work.

Excellent.
Steven Ehrman is one of the best contemporary writers of pastiches and this effort does not disappoint. The character traits, dialog and writing fit right in with the model provided by the canon, and Holmes's subtle observations and brilliant ratiocination are exceptionally impressive. It's what a pastiche should be.

Good Victorian Murder Mystery
I admired the original Sir Arthur Conan Doyle mysteries not so much for the mystery, although I liked that, but for the dialogue between Watson and Holmes. To me that is what sets some of the better "new" Holmes stories apart from the pack. I found this book to meet my requirements. The characters of Holmes and Watson ring true and the mystery was a good one. I pride myself on picking the murderer, but I was fooled. I have read the author's other works and this is a "traditional" type Holmes stories as are the others. This Holmes is no Robert Downey Jr. superman, but that is okay by me. The action gets started quickly in this one and our boys are off to solve the crime. I recommend this for Holmes aficionados.

Good story
I liked this mystery, and really enjoyed the interaction between Holmes and Watson. The mystery kept me guessing, and the style of writing kept it moving right along. This is part of a series of books I do enjoy, but with they all had been edited better. This is better than the earlier books, but still needs a good editor to find those missing punctuation marks and some places where the wrong words have been used.
