I am glad I read this book although it only increased my despair at the malaise afflicting our country
Reading this book once again brought home forcefully why I had to quit working for government at any level. It is incredibly frustrating for employees who are trying to do a good job to have to constantly fight against both the inertia and the constant attempts by some for self-aggrandizement.On the other side of the equation, why is it so difficult for a company to admit a mistake in design or manufacture? Is it because our tort system has become so punitive that it amounts to falling one's sword to admit to a mistake? As with so many problems facing us in our daily lives there are no easy answers, no easy fixes. Attempts by legislation to fix problems seem to always concentrate on the easy fix or easy answer and fail to correct what they attempt to correct or make it worse.

Outstanding book
Very in depth and extremely well researched and written- this book tells the story of TWA Flight 800- and the stories of so many who were affected by the tragedy. It’s meticulous and detailed, but written in a way that moves fast and keeps the readers interest

A Great Read!
Very well-written. Don't listen to the negative reviewers who gave low marks just because the author didn't buy into the conspiracy theory. That theory was given it's due coverage here and debunked. Anyone familiar with the workings of government at any level can understand agency infighting and the other things that delayed the refocusing of this on the true cause. An amazing play-by-play of how investigators were able to literally put all the pieces together to come up with the most likely cause of this tragedy. I really enjoyed the way the author pulled the many different story lines together into a coherent, comprehensive story.

Her research and reporting probably makes it safer for everyone to fly.
Although it's been 20 years, we haven't forgotten the ill-fated Flight 800. The author tells us a lot about the passengers and the investigation, and how she concluded the cause was a fuel tank explosion, not the terrorism that's been so touted in popular news and documentaries. People might prefer a more dramatic story, but in this case, she gets to the bottom of a design flaw. Her research and reporting probably makes it safer for everyone to fly.

The Deadly Departure of Flight 800
Clearly, concisely and compassionately written. Christine's voice regarding the tragedy is resonant about TWA Flight 800. I had been a believer of the conspirator theory since the accident. I have flown the 747 for over 16 years and never doubted its capability. Christine's well documented report has convinced me otherwise. Her compassion regarding the victims and families is heartfelt. Her perspective on the people involved in the investigation is compelling. Whether you have a curious interest into the findings of this accident or if you are a student or experienced aviation accident investigator, I highly recommend reading this book! interesting counterpoint to the documentary, TWA FLIGHT 800
This book provides lots of details on the fuel tank being the source of explosion. It's still hard to ignore all the eyewitness accounts from the night of the crash, indicating an outside source of explosion, i.e., a missile.

Plodding, Disjointed...Don't Waste Your Time
Surely there must be better written, researched and edited books on TWA 800 than this one. It's plodding, disjointed and difficult to read. Don't waste your time or money on this one.

Deadly Departures Recommended for All Rooticians
I opened the book as a skeptic and watched my skepticism develop into curiosity, then riveted attention. I am a rootician by trade, i.e., my professional mission is to save lives, assets, and careers through thoughtful inquiry. Certainly every rootician’s library should include access to this book.Full disclosure: I am not associated in any way, except as a customer and/or victim, with any aspect of the transportation industry. The Boeing 747 designated TWA Flight 800 exploded just south of east Moriches, Long Island, NY at 2031 hours EST on July 17, 1996 with the loss of 230 people . Most investigators and reviewers, including me, believe that the event set-up included the establishment of an explosive atmosphere in the center wing fuel tank and defective wiring and that the explosion was triggered by a spark from the defective wiring.Observation: The magnitude of the harm was limited/mitigated by the flight being only partially booked. That particular Boeing 747-131 could have accommodated over a hundred or so more passengers . A similar statement could be made for RMS Titanic, which was deliberately underbooked.Observation: The book does not clearly satisfy its title. I did not turn the last page with a clear picture of the conditions, behaviors, actions, and inactions that resulted in the disaster nor of those that could result in a repeat.Observation: Every explosive atmosphere is an explosion waiting to happen. It has been impossible to date to guarantee that a detonating trigger phenomenon will not occur.Observation: It is hard not to compare the TWA 800 Disaster with Apollo 13 Event .Observation: The book largely ignores the culture of crass economic decision making with weak safety leadership that resulted in the explosive atmosphere in the center wing fuel tank and in the existence of old lightly inspected wiring. Does this issue arise in Deepwater Horizon Macondo, BP Texas City 2005, Fukushima, Chernobyl, Bhopal, and other cases? What happened to the moral compass?

Deadly Departure: Why the Experts Failed to... Christine Negroni
Deadly Departure: Why the Experts Failed to...Christine Negroninegroni has written a fast paced and accurate masterpiece of aviation accident literature paying attention to a lot of detail int his very tragic event. also making necessary a co2 filling of empty tanks a fact known for a long time in the industry that empty tanks produce fumes, in this case there was extremely probabyl a fume explosion for a variety of operational and electrical reasons. wiring, hot airconditioning etc. being placed through or below the main tank, which was empty on this flight to paris. - the wingtanks being sufficent to carry the necessary fule load.
