I can cut off the right length, wrap it around the thread, and complete the joint (where it stays put), all with minimal hassle. However, I found that this works only with brass joints. With joints in plastic fittings (such as I use on my drip irrigation system) the tape seems too thick to be manipulated by the rather weak threads (but this may be because I haven't got my technique right yet). However, since many people say that tape isn't necessary on plastic in any case (because the threads distort when tightened and form a seal by themselves) I'm not very worried about this.
