This is a great way to compost your food scraps: quickly, easily, and odorlessly. I put mine next to the kitchen back door. So convenient to just throw my food scraps in there after preparing food or eating a meal. The worms reproduce quickly and turn the compost into wonderful castings rather fast. I would recommend also having a paper shredder to shred a bunch of newspaper to add into the bins as well. The manufacturer recommends having a 50/50 ratio of "greens" to "browns." Adding shredded paper as a "brown" helps keep the moisture balance inside; it would get too moist if all you added was food scraps.I bought the 1 pound bag of red wigglers to start my composter. They are hard working little guys. However, I think they are too small to use for fishing purposes. Easy fix; just go to your local bait shop and buy a bunch of nightcrawlers and add them too. They like living in the composter just fine, and they get along with the other worms. Nightcrawlers don't compost as quickly, so I think the red wigglers are good to have to keep breaking down your compost as a good rate.It also makes a great on-going science project for your kids. They like looking in the worms from time-to-time.The worm castings it produces is GREAT for the garden.I did have a brief issue with fruit flies on my composter. I just added more shredded paper, and covered the layer of compost with a pretty thick layer of non-shredded, moist sheet paper. That seemed to block the flies from getting in to the compost.Overall, a great little unit that is easy to use and doesn't take up very much floor space.

I adore the concept of worms processing my organic waste, but I found that using a worm composter to be more trouble than it is worth. The worms do not eat citrus, so that has to be separated, and have a hard time breaking down larger items like avocado skins & pits. You have to constantly check the moisture levels and drain off the excess liquid. Over time, a sludge develops in the drain pan which must be removed, and the amount of compost after several months is just enough to feed a few houseplants. If you generate a lot of organic waste, it is much more practical to use a traditional compost pile to break it all down for your garden. If you have chickens or fish, you could think of this worm composter as a way to supplement your chicken feed/fish food needs. I would not buy this again, but yet, I continue to use my worm composter while complaining about its shortcomings....

I had an older worm farm with more spindly legs and slightly bigger trays. It worked well until the legs started breaking, the lid blew off in a storm, and it became harder to keep the worms happy. This Worm Factory has a much more solid leg design, though it shares a pretty flimsy lid. I intend to design and build a wooden lid that will stay on and protect the worms in inclement weather.So - this is a solid design and I've found that the smaller trays fill slightly faster, which is a good thing, as you get a tub of casings more frequently to amend to your soil. Also, now with a brand name farm, I'll be able to get replacement parts in the future. All-in-all, a worthy upgrade, but not perfect

Really enjoy having this worm home! The layered tray system really makes gathering the compost easier.My only complaint is that the plastic warps in hot/cold weather (not extreme heat/cold... we live in Southern California) which caused these small openings on the sides of the tray. I had a couple instances of run away worms but resolved this by filling them in with news paper.

I didn't realize I was making the mistake of buying a model that doesn't have a lid.It only has a flat piece that sits down inside the top tray. If your planning on using thisoutside this model will not work. Any rain will flood your trays.On the up side the seller made every effort to get me a lid. But I decided to try it as is.My mistake for ordering the wrong model.The seller "the Squirm Firm" gets a 5 star rating from me though.

Amazed on how much food these worms consume, I purchased the 250 container of worms and they have kept up with a daily amount of kitchen scrapes. I have only four trays used and am ready to empty one of them each month. I have tried to incorporate the fifth tray but as of yet unable to. the worms move up the trays nicely, I just have to check to see if all worms left the tray, keep moist and balanced between types of scrapes used. I even started to put in leaves, grass clippings and other items around the yard as the kitchen scrapes can't keep up. I also started to put in a handful of dirt in each tray to give worms the ability to consume to items in the trays.

Received everything needed to start up quickly. Came with a nice booklet with instructions how the set up and maintain happy worms. Attaching legs or base to bottom tray the screw holes didn't align properly, so I needed to redrill one hole a bit larger to fit the bolt through the bottom tray. Other than that everything else was simple and easy to put together. My worms are enjoying their new home with lots of room to multiply!

Just got it in today. Setup was extremely simple. Couple of bolts and screws for bottom and base. Attach spigot with included hand tightening nut and stack your first tray. Took worms from my Malibu's Blend compost bag and placed them in the setup. They dove down and seem happy. Will update review down the road if I have any issues or if things are still going smoothly.
