Product Description Two CD pressing of the Rap trio's genre-defining 1989 debut album includes a bonus disc containing 14 rare B-sides and remixes: 'Freedom Of Speech (We Got Three Minutes'), 'Strickly Dan Stuckie', 'Jenifa (Taught Me)' (Twelve Inch Version), 'Skip To My Loop', 'Potholes In My Lawn' (Twelve Inch Version), 'Me Myself & I' (Oblapos Mode Version), 'Ain't Hip To Be Labelled A Hippie', 'What's More', 'Brain Washed Follower', 'Say No Go' (New Keys Version), 'Mad Daddy On The Left', 'Double Huey Skit', 'Ghetto Thang' (Ghetto Ximer Version) and 'Eye Know' (The Know It All Mix). 38 tracks in all. Warner. .com De La's debut represented a new path for hip-hop, a reaction to conventions that had turned into clichรฉs. It was friendly and playful enough to cross over to a pop audience (thanks to Prince Paul's production, which found the funk hiding inside Steely Dan and "Schoolhouse Rock"), but complicated and tough enough to be hugely influential in the hip-hop world. Cryptic but ecstatic, and sometimes sexy (especially the ingenious double-entendre "Buddy"), Trugoy and Posdnuos's lyrics invented a "new style of speak," dense with self-invented slang and metaphors. The hits, including "Say No Go" and "Me Myself And I," are delightful, but the little sketches and sound-experiments between them make the whole disc flow effortlessly. --Douglas Wolk

An Album You Should Not Miss
(Skip down a bit to get to the nitty-gritty of the review)As a Hip-Hop head, Iโm always looking for my next favorite album. De La Soulโs 1989 effort, 3 Feet High and Rising, is a serious contender despite how lighthearted it is.This was made before the, horribly constructed, sample clearance process became 100% mandatory in releasing commercial music. It was, unfortunately due to that and Tommy Boy (record label), that you may never hear the album. It is not available to stream or download, was never reprinted, and plans for re-release have effectively been halted as of 2019.(nitty gritty starts here)3 Feet High and Rising is the happiest and weirdest Hip-Hop has ever been without making sacrifices. Featuring production by Prince Paul, utilizing around 60 samples from every nook that had a cranny (and then one from its granny), the sheer number of samples means another album like this will never happen again (but we can dream). Some songs sound a bit dated production-wise, but if you like any Hip-Hop from the 80s, youโll be right at home.De La Soulโs three emcees: Pos, Trugoy, and Maseo, are as off the wall as the music. Both lyrically and sonically, the album is casual and loaded with eccentric personality. No gangsta-rap or mumbling here either; instead, the trio allows themselves to flex their rapping skills in any way they choose, often using wildly imaginative imagery or concepts. Even the skits are entertaining. One thing to stress before closing, this is not a non-sensical album. There is plenty of intellect and wisdom imparted to the listener, however farfetched De La might get.(nitty gritty ends here)Definitely get this album. Worth every penny. And be careful, you might not be able to replace it in a few years.

Too cool to be a classic - and yet it is.
Gee...I don't subscribe to the idea that the good old days are better (or worse) musically than now, but,I dunno, De La Soul's "3 Feet High and Rising," (along with records like the Stone Roses album) sometimes make me think that 1989 was some sort of high watermark for popular music.Calling a record a 'classic' or 'landmark' loads on a lot in the way of expectation, but this album can easily carry it off.It doesn't need stuffy admiration or solemn praise. It's fun. It just is.Originally I had the vinyl with the tricky cover that didn't wear so well. From Amazon I got the anniversary version of the CD with the bonus disc and I'm glad I have it.

Can't wait to play it!
I loved reading through everyone else's review of this. Came across the album quite by accident a few days ago and thought it must be a new compilation. But, by what everyone else is saying it's a million years ago when it first came out. I'm blown away!I've always loved De La Soul and all my faves are on this hit list. It's a classic move to stick a bonus CD in the case. Normally, if I ever saw "Bonus Tracks" listed on any album, they were generally awful! Not this time. My copy came this morning. I'm off to stick some batts in me CD player and pop this on.See ya!

Truly awesome
This truly is one of the greatest records of all time. So innovative and fresh, at the time it blew away every other rap record and even now manages to sound new and groundbreaking. Samples that are pure genius, coupled with a rhyme style which on certain tracks, even 25 years later, I'm still finding new nuances with, make this outstanding. Buy on the fully extended version which includes every b side of the time cause unfortunately whilst at the time De La could only produce pure 24 Carat gold the period was short lived when they ditched the daisy age. Am only giving this five out of five cause there isn't a six!!!
