It works on Windows 10 64 bit, and also on 7 and 8.1.
It works on Windows 10 64 bit, but needs some tips.1st Open the Install disk (not auto run) in the explorer.2nd Right click on the install.exe and choose Program Compatibility Troubleshooter in the context menu.3rd Choose Troubleshoot program between the two options.4th Choose Previous version... and next, then Windows XP (SP3).5th Push the button for Test the program..., installation will work.6th First opening of the oed.exe you should do almost the same process from the 1st, but choose Windows Vista SP2 this time. Then you will see the OED open normally. If an error occures in the 6th process, OED will work afterward. The same process can be used for Windows 8.1 x64 and 7 x64. I wrote it in amazon.co.jp and 19 of 19 people in Japan approved it.

It's the real Oxford English Dictionary on my Mac.
For years we used an old Funk & Wagnall and that old book club two volume edition of the OED for our reference. Then, at least for a while, our local library provided online access to the OED. It was great. No, "caterjunes" is not a real word. Yes, no one knows what "royn" means, though it is a real word. Yes, Shakespeare has the first citation for "eyeballs"; thank you Cracked. Then we lost access. What a bummer.Well, now we have the OED on our Mac. It works in Mountain Lion. It's a bit un-Macky with its own weird scroll bar and button layout, but it searches, it's comprehensive, and you can cut and paste your results. It comes on two CDs, so you have to load a file from one, then a file from the other, and then you can do your installation which was a bit tricky. We had to dig up an old CD drive to do this, but it worked.Sure, we'd love Apple to license the OED as their standard dictionary or for the OED to come out with an iPhone version, but this version is great. We're back in business.

Best dictionary - software ... usable
Absolutely the best dictionary.American Heritage Dictionary runs a close second, though, and much cheaper if on a budget, and free on the net, unlike the OED. OED contains numerous obsolete words which are interesting and useful to know, and numerous source quotations going back a thousand years. It is the obsolete words, for the most part, that gets the word count up. The very first word I looked up was not even in the OED, although the internet has a few good examples of its use ("conclusivity"). That was disappointing, but doesn't detract from the OED being the number one choice.Software - quite usable - if you can install it! You must be the administrator on the computer to install it, so while its allowed on my work computer, I can't put it there, which is frustrating. When I installed it on my home machine, it only showed up in the administrator account and I had to find it (in c:\Program Files(x86)\OED v4.0) and make a shortcut by hand in my normal user account. After running it in my user account I had to reinsert the install disk once before it would work.Software Features - simple user interface, provides basic needs. Every word hyperlinked for instant access. Easy to use.Software Weakness - not integrated with anything, a little cumbersome if you're looking for advanced features (there are none - brew your own).Pro: The only dictionary (of English words!) most writers should ever needCon: Software installation issues and low feature software.

NOT COMPATIBLE WITH EL CAPITAN (OS X 10.11)
This is a great program, and I have used it to great success for over six years. Potential purchasers should be *very aware* that the Mac version of this program does not work with El Capitan (OS X 10.11). It was and still is compatible on Yosemite (10.10).

OED: Excellent
This comprehensive dictionary of the English language is an essential tool for me as an editor (it is named as the preferred authority in the style sheet my employer follows). I haven't the space on my shelves for the full print edition, and given the fact that I work remotely, the CD-ROM edition meets my needs excellently.

Love the OED - the software takes us back to 1990s
LOVE the OED, have used it forever. There's nothing like it in the English language (and most other languages too). But couldn't OUP splash out and hire software designers that could bring the interface and design into the 21st century. Yes, it's fast. It is useable. But as other reviewers have mentioned, there is a lot of functionality that could be there and isn't. I'm glad to have it (I do think it overpriced) and I will be using it, but it's so sad that this usually stellar institution of a publishing house rests on the laurels of its Oxford University affiliation and comes up with this mediocrity. Versions 1 and 2 were actually much better.

Not compatible with Windows 7
The system requirements say this is compatible with Windows up to Vista. It says nothing about Windows 7. I have two separate computers that are both running Windows 7. It wouldn't install on either one. I tried to uninstall and then reinstalling it but that didn't work. One of my computers has Windows 7 Professional which is able to run most XP software as well. In view of all the glowing reviews I had high hopes. However, if you look at the dates of the reviews most are from 2009. The only positive review from 2011 was by a person talking about the on-line version - not the CD-ROM version. Unfortuantely I'll have to return it. So if you have Windows 7, don't bother to order this.

They Finally Got It Right!
Having owned the 2nd version of this software with it's onerous requirement to insert the damn CD every 60 or 90 days (I forget because because I very rarely used it because of that) this version is a pleasure to use. The installation was a breeze and so far no need to verify the Mac version. The Windows version requires verification only the first time (hopefully) you run the software. Functionally is is very easy to use and has an advanced search that allows you to Boolean search the entire text of the dictionary for up to three words with various filters. I just received it a few days ago and haven't played with it a whole lot, but so far no snags. One interesting point though, when I look up the word "set" it's not in alphabetical order it first appears between sesh and seskyn. You have to scroll down a few pages alphabetically to get to the rest of the definition of set (the 20 or so pages of text).

Words words words
This is a fantastic way of enjoying the full Oxford English Dictionary and indeed all the additions since its publication, which are included. The searchableness (who would have believed that was a word?), the printing and the copy and paste make this edition particularly useful. I installed it on my Macbook Air using the OSx10.7 (Lion) operating system, it works like a dream. Frankly apart from having 20 volumes taking up shelf space to admire, I cannot think of any advantage in owning the hardback version, as this is still eminently browse able (not a word). It is a stunning work, the interface is useful and attractive so other negative reviewers must be reviewing an earlier version. I love this. It is useful, authoritative, educational and entertaining and fabulous value for money.Every student of the English language should own this.

An unbeatable work of reference
The complete OED is a stunning piece of work. Its conversion into digital form at a relatively reasonable price puts into everyone's hands a tool of unrivalled power with which to explore and expand our knowledge of the language. To be able to jump from one entry to another so easily gives it the flexibility it has always lacked. And digitisation will allow updates to be added as often as needed. The combination of the finest and most thoroughly researched erudition with complete accessibility makes this a must-have product. All congratulations to OUP for bringing it to market in such a usable form.

Excellent product, but can be tricky to install
I have owned the previous versions of OED on CD (and spent quite a lot of money in doing so) and this is definitely the best yet. But those who designed the installation program didn't bother to test it properly. If you install the product on Windows, you are required to insert the installation disk when running the installed product for the very first time - this brings up a copyright message, and if you agree to it, the whole installation begins again! This won't happen of course if you don't have autoplay on your CD drive. On the plus side: it installs on Macs (fantastic!) and it doesn't keep forcing you to insert the disk at intervals to prove you own it (and to prove the disk is still in pristine condition) like the earlier versions. So - would have been five stars if their software developers had been as clever as the editors of this superb work.

Immensely worthwhile
I've been very happy with this. I use it mostly for going in-depth with Shakespearean usages, and it's immensely useful to get precise definitions and examples (though for some reason Macbeth's "sere" doesn't appear in his sense). It's full of words that are no longer in use, for the benefit of those who read literature. The interface is a bit old-fashioned, but it doesn't matter; it's just a dictionary. A very worthwhile purchase.

Windows 10

Windows10 < Parallels < MacOS Catalina

indispensable, especially for learners of english
You need few dictionary to master english: one of this is the OEL. Only if you know the origin of a word and its development you can really catch its meaning. So even if you are a beginner student of english I advice you to build up you vocabulary using the OEL. Only there you can find the reason why we say "to CATCH a train!"

Oxford English Dictionary, 2nd Edition, Version 4.0 (Windows & Mac...

The OED - ALL of it!
If you expect an academic review you are not going to get it. This was an expensive present that I don't really need and is of no true practical use to me and I spend hours browsing through the data. It is the Oxford English Dictionary. It is the best. There is no more to be said.
