Access the laptop pocket from inside the top pouch of the backpack; the laptop slides down inside the back of the backpack. It's a good idea to have your laptop protected in its own small, padded zip case (you need to provide this; it does not come with the pack). I needed to take the laptop out of the backpack to fit the pack in the overhead on the prop plane. This is a great backpack for my camera gear, and it had lots of pockets and pouches for all sorts of other carry-on items. It has fairly comfortable shoulder straps, and it has a waist strap to help with the weight. I definitely recommend it. **Q: Is the divider between the top and bottom compartments removable? The interior size of top compartment is 12"x7"x10". **Q: I'm 5' 11" 245lbs with broad shoulders. Would this bag work for me?** A: I'm 6 foot and 185 lbs and it works fine. It p s narrower than I am use to wearing a common backpack. Straps are comfortable for me. If you have very wide shoulders it might not be so comfortable for many hours of use.
