Has anyone used this on a projector? does the camera require lights on?

I bought it as a present for my fiancé and he tells me it do require lights on as the camera needs to see clearly the white markings on the mat, in regards to projector it's my next intention to fix this up, I think it would be super set up using a projector screen or if your wall is white
