I FOUND A MAGNETIC BASE TO WORK VERY WELL AND THERE WERE MANY ADJUSTMENTS POSSIBLE SO THAT THE DIAL INDICATOR WAS PROPERLY ALIGNED WITH THE INTAKE VALVE STEM. VERY NICE CASE TO KEEP THE INSTRUMENT FROM BEING DAMAGED. Review: Not a bad dial indicator - I needed something to give me a rough idea of the runout in a motorcycle wheel.This indicator did the job. Although I can not vouch for its accuracy, it gave me believable results. The included fixture provided sufficient flexibility to get the probe where I needed, and the magnetic base was strong enough to give a stable reference point. Plan to use it to find TDC on car for all 6 cylinders and need it to be strong.** A: Plenty strong enough if it is an iron block. Aluminum? Possibly doable. My application was to measure runout of a motorcycle rear wheel with respect to the final drive housing (BMW R1150RS). The final drive housing is aluminum, so I clamped a Vise-Grip to a handy bolt in the housing and stuck the magnet to the Vise-Grip. Measurement repeatability was less than 1 mil. On an aluminum block, you could cobble together an iron or steel plate that is bolted to the top of the block in a stud hole. You should be able to achieve the accuracy of the dial indicator itself.(If you are doing this with the head in place, the old kludge of a long screwdriver or socket extension in a spark plug hole will give a good relative indication of piston position.) **Q: what is the diameter or the vertical rod? will it fit in a standard router's 1/2" collet?** A: My dial caliper reads 0.467 inches. I don't have a micrometer, but I would expect that reading to be good to +- 2 mils.
