This curriculum is great for kids who need hands on learning and/or repetition. If you child catches on quickly, this is not for them.

Saxon is an incremental approach with lots of repetition and drill built in. The teacher's edition is necessary to introduce new skills at an appropriate time. It's a fully scripted approach but you do not have to use the script - just use the creative teaching ideas. My 6 yo son LOVES to do math. It's his favorite subject. Lots of hands on materials available to go along with this set.

We completed Saxon 1 with my first grade daughter last year, and it provided an EXCELLENT foundation in all areas of math. I bought Saxon 2 and decided to skip to Saxon 3 instead. My reasoning is that Saxon provides REVIEW constantly, Saxon basically reviews the previous grade in the first 30 lessons anyway, and my daughter would have screamed if I had made her continue with more "easy" math. My kindergarten son is working through Saxon 1 this year, and I will probably use our Saxon 2 materials for him next year just because he is a year younger and needs more concrete skills still. Saxon 2 does provide a solid math background for students, but if you are beginning homeschooling, go to Saxon's homepage and give your child the placement test they have there. That would have helped me considerably!
