Works well, especially given its size and price
Works very well. Have only had it for a short time so don't know how long it will last. Being a nerd, I conducted some time trials and found the following numbers to be consistent throughout use when heating a large mug with 16 oz of water:2 min: ~120 deg. F3 min: ~150 deg. F4 min: ~180 deg. F5 min: ~200 deg. F5.5 min: boilingI only reheat my coffee to around 150 so these numbers help me. Given size & price I think 5.5 min. to get to a full boil is very respectable. I can see how the heating element would burn out immediately if not immersed so I would heed that warning.

1" wide head. Perfect!
I absolutely LOVE this thing. I will use it twice to get anything from the factory off but it answers the one question that I had. Will it fit into my mug/vacuum insulated/better-than-yeti thing. It does! It is exactly 1" wide. It is acceptable speed. I stopped recording before others walked through talking. The water or coffee or anything boils. My mug is a 16oz Zojirushi and it was impossible to heat up the liquid (water, coffee, etc) without pouring it into something that can boil it again.

Tested several times and works well. Just follow the directions.
Note that the heating element received includes a heavy duty in line switch (see image). The line switch works so that you do not have to unplug the unit from a wall outlet. I used the unit to make hot water for coffee and for boiling water for cooking while on a trip. No problems. The directions state to run the unit 5 times to condition the coil. Note that the coil does have a metal residue on it. I suggest that you use the unit to boil a 50/50 solution of cleaning vinegar and water a few times. Then with a cleaning rag rub off the coating. Then boil water a few more times and you will be good to go. I like the 500 watt unit as higher wattage units can trip GFI.

Five Stars
Works great. Coffee hot in dorm room at military school where coffee pots and microwaves are not allowed.

Excellent immersion heater to boil water in hotel room.
Wow, this immersion heater heat cup of water very fast. Hence, caution is in order when using this. The moment water start boiling turn off by pulling the plug out of socket. This immersion heater can easily melt/burn if left unattended.

Doesn't last long...
I travel a lot and don't always drink coffee, sometimes tea is in order! Since most places don't have hot-pots readily available and they are hard to travel with I wanted to give this thing a shot. First of all, the little "Tooth" near the handle leaves some of the heating element out of the water which can cause a bit of an issue with it heating up and some smell and discoloration.I used it perhaps 5 times, and then it just stopped working. Given the price-point I am not super surprised, but a little disappointed since I did want something that I could make hot water with while traveling, but this is for sure not the product I need.

Doesn't heat up
I liked the size. It's bigger than the tiny travel immersion wands but not gigantic. I bought this for a ten day trip so I could heat ip water for coffee and tea. However it doesn't work. At all. The plastic handle gets warm but the wand doesn't heat up. I should have tested it. Very poor workmanship. The plastic is misshapen and it only gets hot if it's lying on it's side and not if it's vertically immersed water. I've ordered another one. If it works, I will update this reveiw.

Works well and quickly
Boils water very quickly. Useful when staying in a hotel that does not have coffee maker in room.
