Great (secular!) homeschool science resource
Using this for homeschool science. Love the simple lesson-based format. We add in experiments and such as appropriate, but this is a great guide for what to teach. It's often difficult to find science curriculum that works in a homeschool setting and is also secular. This is the best I've found! If I had to have a negative, it would be the reading level. It seems a little high for my first grader to read independently. This isn't a deal breaker for us, though, as we do the lessons together anyway.

Any Steck-Vaughn science books are great resources.
Any science texts that I have bought is well worth the cost. I use them as a special education resource for older students. This book is written at the 1st grade level and has limited text and information. The grade 2 book jumps significantly in the amount of text but can be used for grades 5 and up for students who can read a full page or more. Look up any Steck-Vaughn science book, there are great science texts about animals, plants, and water (aquatic life), these are about 3rd grade level reading but with details needed by older students.

Just the right amount of material for a small group!!
The book arrived promptly and in perfect condition. It's being used to teach students in a small setting. Not an overwhelming amount of material for them. Thank you!!

Critical thinking, Easy learning, Easy to read
I suppose my expectations are a bit high, just because I’m an engineer and also a nerd, so if this review is overly critical, please excuse me.First off, it’s nicely laid out and the topics flow well within one another, transitionally speaking. However, I find that much of the vocabulary is mediocre compared to what a first grader may be capable of recalling. Take the word “gravity”, for instance- there’s mention of axis and orbit in the book but no mention of gravity, which, in the terms of a first grader I know, is just “... the close orbit to the ground that keeps everything near the [planet].”Secondly, the book is well written and very simple to teach and even simpler to understand for a first grader, though it does lack some detail and elaboration on some topics, such as life cycles and classifications. My son thought larvae were specific to butterflies only, although the chapter could easily have encompassed insects as a whole and covered perhaps 2 or 3 different life cycles of insects that hatch differently. So, in some ways it needs some clarification, though it’s completely up to you to decide if your child requires you to lend a few other examples.Lastly, after each lesson there’s a page with questions for reading, vocab, and critical thinking skills, which to answer the child has to write out their answer and use the lesson as a reference source, which IS AMAZING to get these youngish humans to using their minds, learning to observe, and recall information (aka low key studying without them knowing it, ha!). And the pictures aren’t colored, so once they finish you can let the child color in the picture as n incentive of doing a good job and motivating them to really pay attention to the work. I’d say that’s the biggest plus side to this book is it encourages the child to observe and recall the information AND work on their handwriting and sentence formation, if needed. (Again, I’m a stickler for form, so that’s totally up to you!)Overall, it’s a really good buy for the price and content, I use it as a workbook for homeschooling in conjunction with my own lesson plans/guided reading and activities to offer a more broad scope of material covered, if necessary. If you’re a detail-oriented person and need the whole facts, or are buying this book for a like-minded child, it’s a good book to use with another source.

Wonderful Science Book
Stop looking. This is the perfect science book for your first grader if you don’t want to do experiments. Of course, you can add those fun experiments later but if your just getting started and want a good introduction this book is perfect. 😃😄😄

Good supplement.
This book is pretty small, black and white, I plan to just use it as a supplement to the Harcourt science book I got.
