Post World War II Donald
I have been absolutely loving the Al Taliaferro/Bob Karp Donald Duck dailies. Having said that I have noticed some continual watering down of the jokes over the years. It’s happened in the past where an edgy comic took off and the publisher asked the writer to tone down the jokes. This DEFINTELY happened with Elias Segar and Popeye and although I have no evidence I highly suspect that’s what’s happening here. When Karp first started writing Donald Duck he basically made him a sadistic sociopath. I kid you not, he was often detestable but that was the humor. The original Popeye was a violent, ill-tempered foul mouthed sailor whom you would likely never want to meet if he actually existed. Same with Donald, but that was the humor. This is in no way meant to say the strip is no longer funny it’s just not AS funny to me. Other people may prefer the gentler humor. So, is Donald completely defanged? Heck No. In one strip Donald is trying to teach his dog Bolivar to play dead. Having no success Donald pulls out a rifle and says, “Now, take your choice – play or be” In another comic one of Donald’s nephews apologizes to his teacher for calling her a monkey but instead of handing her the traditional apple he gives her a banana. Clearly Donald’s influence has had an effect. There are DEFINITELY more than a couple of laugh out loud moments but also a lot of mildly funny comics and some that, for the life of me, I couldn’t figure out the joke. This isn’t the first volume where Karp’s humor flew over my head and maybe it’s because the joke was more relevant in the mid to late 1940’s. The one thing that hasn’t changed is Taliaferro’s near flawless artwork. I do think it’s a bit unfair that he gets the only billing on the front cover as it was a collaborative effort with Karp but his drawings are just magical.I always love the production values from IDW but the 6 paragraph introduction by Alberto Becattini was one of the weakest I’ve ever read and felt like it was phoned in. For me the gold standard of comic introductions are the ones by Fantagraphics for the Floyd Gottfredson Mickey Mouse comics. Even if some of the meanness has left the comic, this is still a fantastic strip and there are moments when Karp really knocks one out of the ballpark.

I love old comic strips, be they Krazy Kat, Donald Duck, Pogo, or Beetle Bailey. I especially enjoyed these.

Donald Duck-Newspapers
Fine delivery service at busy holiday time of year. What can we say, more than Disney is Disney. If you love most all things Disney, this is a fine sort of collector's item. Short Donald Duck cartoons from the old Newspaper 'funny pages' days. Guaranteed to raise at least a smile if not outright laughs.
