Outdated hotel list
I know this is the best guide for Madagascar, where I have lived for 3 years. I have an older version, but just bought this hoping for updates on lodging recommendations, but I'm disappointed to see hotels that closed over a decade ago that are still in the latest version. I get that you can't visit everywhere for each update, but through guide contacts, reader feedback, and email, it should not be that hard to check this for an update.

I found that the information about accommodations was useful in making these selections
I found this guide quite helpful in planning a family trip to Madagascar. There is much to see and do in Madagascar so we needed to be selective on how we spent our time. I found the guide very helpful in making the selections. I found that the information about accommodations was useful in making these selections. We haven't get taken the trip, so I might have some different conclusions after the full experience. But for planning purposes, I found this guide the most useful of those I reviewed.

Looks great so far...
Good chance that I will grade the book higher. Since I have yet to arrive in Madagascar, it is difficult to heaap praise on the book, which reads well & helps get me excited about my upcoming trip.

Better of the two guides to Madagascar, but not great
Good basic overview of Madagascar. Since the only really choices for travel guides to Madagascar are this one and the dismal Lonely Planet guide(or, as I call them, the Homely Planet Guides), there isn't a lot of choice. However, there are two many personal experience stories of no relevance to the casual traveler. Also, many things are left out which are significant, in an attempt to be PC. For example, it mentions that the most unusual looking lemur is called Ah Ah and is very rare and gives suggestions for seeing one. However, the book neglects to mention the reason it is so rare is that it is considered an omen of bad luck, and, when one is seen by the locals, it is killed in an attempt to ward off the bad luck.I will also mention I bought this as a Kindle book, and getting to the appropriate part of the book is not easy. From now on, all my travel guides will be hard copies.

Get this one
Unlike the Lonely Planet guide we also bought, this one's has All the info we need. The other once is missing some of the national parks even!

The Best
This is the best, especially if you want some of the country's culture and heritage. I actually traveled with Lonely Planet as well.

A must read for all avid fans of Madagascar
A brilliant book. Packed with nuggets of information. I've found it so useful when I was there. She makes you want to go *everywhere* though as it's so well written. I'm now a convert too, equally enthusiastic about this beautiful, unique island and re-visit every year...sometimes twice a year ! I'd personally add a lot more photos but it's because I need to *see* something to decide whether I want to make the effort to get there (but in doubt, I just do a Google search for images and it usually matches her description perfectly). A must-read for anyone who has a fascination for this extraordinary country... and her many maps are probably the best you're going to get.

Going to the Land of the Lemurs? Take this
Excellent up-to-date (2014) comprehensive guide to Madagascar which has given me confidence that I know what I need to take to enjoy our trip in 3 weeks time. It has also provided more detailed background on places than any internet searches have come up with so David Austin and Hilary Bradt really do provide excellent insight on Madagascar.

A must if you are going to that fabulous - but not easy to travel in - island
I read this guide book before I went to Madagascar and during my recent trip there. It's "the" Madagascar travel bible. I found a few inaccuracies here and there but as they ask you to let them know about these, I will do that. A must if you are going to that fabulous - but not easy to travel in - island.

Thanks for a wonderfully researched intro to Madagascar
I normally use guide books to dip into when in country. However, this one reads so well, with added colour and points of interest, that it's a pleasure reading it from cover to cover. Can't wait to go now! Thanks for a wonderfully researched intro to Madagascar.

More than a travel guide
I read this in the kindle version while on holiday there. Our itinerary was pre-arranged and guided, but the accounts of 'free range' travel in this amazing country were fascinating, and the breadth of information about the place and its culture astonishing.
