You can remove the key by putting it back in the lock position after removing it from the laptop. When you engage the lock, you want to make sure it is in the right position due the swiveling mid-piece. By the lock not releasing the key if it is unlocked you can be sure when you pull the key out the lock is engaged, otherwise the whole lock comes out of the Kensington slot. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4.0 out of 5 stars Not bad for the price *by C***D on Reviewed in the United States on June 16, 2014* While this lock isn't as heavy duty as one of the $35 name brand models, it's substantial enough to do the job of keeping a laptop safe from a casual thief. It's a good value for the price, decently made and simply packaged. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 only because the lock is not as sturdy as the more expensive models (but then, it's much cheaper to buy and will still get the job done). If you want a 5 star lock, pay a 5 star price.
