Head is at the correct height and if I bunch up the pillow just a little, I can be right on the end of the pillow so I can read my kindle that's propped up on the bed. I also sleep on my back a lot. Again, this is working great for that. Constant support throughout the night. It's hard to describe. It is very comfortable and has lots of cushioning. But it also has a firmness to it that supports my head. It doesn't have that pure softness that other pillows have. But that little firmness is what I assume allows it to keep doing it's thing all night long. And that firmness, isn't so firm as to cause issues, just enough to keep things supported. I would say it’s more soft due to the material used. However unlike most soft ones the pillow doesn’t lose its shape or give. We have had one for a couple of years and it still has the original shape. **Q: Is it machine washable?** A: There's two parts to the pillow, the inner core and the outer shell. You SHOULD be putting a pillow case over the outer shell like a normal human. But the outer shell is washable so long as you remove the inner core. Inner core is latex foam, outer shell is a zippered case with the hex grid foam incased inside. Lastly to appreciate the purple pillow you truly need stretchy pillow cases, purple makes their own and I have to say they are as good as the pillow and without them, the pillow doesn't really shine, like your getting 50-75% of what the pillow actually offers. **Q: Is there any off-gassing? Does it smell weird?** A: No, it's not a memory foam pillow, Purple Pilows aren't made from any off gassing materials. Purple uses a Latex foam core with latex hex grid over cotton outer layers. Latex doesn't off gas, hence why it's one of the few synthetic rubberized compounds used in the medical field. **Q: Should stomach sleepers get the low profile regardless of body size since the distance from shoulder to neck wont matter too much, or does it matter?** A: I will say, yes. Just received my expensive pillow, low profile is still too high for me and it caused neck pain. Give up it. I replace it with newentor pillow which can adjustable height and gives me efficient neck & shoulder support. I have gone through 4 or 5 different types of pillows over the past few years, but ultimately ended up with my neck hurting. Although so many pillows feel wonderful at the store, it's really evaluating them over the test of time that is the bottom line criteria. At this point, I have been loving them for the past 3 months or so. Recently Wirecutter did an article on recommended pillows. Although I did not take their recommendation, I learned a few things to evaluate when looking for a pillow. The fact that the technology behind Purple pillows is so different appealed to me and seemed promising. I originally ordered the medium height but found that was a bit too high for me, and so I exchanged for the low height. Cannot speak highly enough about them. I can comfortably position my shoulders/neck/head while on my back or on my side and still feel the pillow supporting those areas that don't directly press against the pillow. The one concern I initially had upon opening the pillows was the strong smell. I read in a few places that it is recommended to allow time to air them out. I was skeptical, but removed the pillows from their cases and laid them out on the backs of chairs. Just to note, the inner portion of the pillow is a sort of silicone honeycomb pattern. The outside case is thick and padded with memory foam. The pillows are a bit heavier in weight than anything I had previously experienced. I had a fan on them at high speed for at least 2 days before I began to see a change. It may have taken a bit longer than the 2 days but, with Amazon's 30 day window of return, I was willing to take a chance. It has all worked out very well. As a matter of fact, if anything, the extra weight of the pillows keep them i place on my bed as I move around during the night.
