Nothing but problema
I purchased a new QG5500 in 01/25/2016. The installation was complete and the unit run the first time on 06/11/2016. On 02/02/2018, while on a trip, at 210.2 hours the generator failed as a result of a bad stator. It was repaired by a Cummins service center at no charge. The technician told me at that the brushes were riding high on the slip rings which would cause premature wear. Sounds like a defect to me. On 09/01/2018, while on a trip, at 307.4 hours (97.2 hours after being repaired) the generator failed and I was told by the Cummins Service manager that the brush block was worn out. Really....... brushes wearing out at 300 hours??? The following day I receive an email from Cummins Onan asking for a customer satisfaction survey. I stated the facts and also included my name, phone number and email address. Obviously the survey was not positive. I received a phone call from the Regional manager who called the Cummins service center to have a refund issued for the "worn" brush block replacement. On 04/30/2019, once again, while on a trip, the generator failed at 314.3 hours, (6.9 hours after repair by Cummins). This time I was told that the brush block that they installed previously was defective so they installed another one.On 06/20/2019. while on another trip the generator failed at 324.8 hours (10.5 hours after it was repaired by Cummins).Clearly this unit was defective and I got no satisfaction whatsoever from ANY of the Cummins representatives until I sent an email to the CEO of Cummins describing the problems. Now that he was involved the subordinates that previously wouldn't give me the time of day started jumping through hoops like circus monkeys after the CEO delegated this issue to one of his assistance. Ultimately, I was given a brand new QG5500 generator to replace the unit that was clearly defective. The factory new replacement generator was given to me without ANY warranty whatsoever. You would think that because of all the inconveniences caused by the defective unit that they would at least give me the new generator with the factory 3 year warranty. That in itself shows what little confidence they have in their own product.By the way, anyone considering one of these (QG5500) units, I highly suggest reading through the maintenance manual BEFORE spending your money. The manual states that the cylinder heads should be "CLEANED OR REPLACED" every 450 hours. It is now August of 2021 and I am almost finished installing the new replacement QG5500 but I have ZERO confidence in it so I am mounting a new 9500 watt inverter generator on the trailer hitch cargo carrier to bring along in the event the Onan generator fails.I will say this, the few times that the first QG5500 generator ran prior to failures it was VERY quite and provided plenty of electrical power.

Quiet, Reliable, Generator
I've had this model generator for 14 years. It has over 800hrs on it. It runs very well. My only complaint is that sometimes when it is raining very, very hard and I'm driving down the road and shut it off, I can't restart it until things dry off a little bit. I've learned to not shut it off when driving in the rain. I can't say if this is the generator's fault or the RV's. I can say this, the generator is installed right behind the rear dual wheels and the mud-flaps don't quite protect it from the back splash. About two inches of the outside wheel throws water right on the underside of the generator. I live in the west, so I don't drive in the rain much and have never gotten around to correcting this. For the past ten years I've worked this generator hard, running it continuously for a couple of days at a time in 115deg plus heat. No problems. One thing to note is that if you live in a very hot climate, be sure to RUN the fuel out of the carb, not just drain it, or after about 10 years, you will have to replace the carb (not expensive, and easy to do). The carb cannot be rebuilt and the passages in it are very fine and old gas can gum them up. My generator runs and starts as good as when it was new. I do recommend using the Onan oil filters. Last year I tried the Wix and after I stored the unit for the winter noticed a puddle of oil under the unit. After a short panic I discovered it was the filter leaking. Went back to Onan filters.
