Baldwin Round, Single Cylinder Front Door Deadbolt Featuring SmartKey Re-key Technology and Microban Protection, in Venetian Bronze

I've always found Baldwin door products to be superior to most, if not all, competitors. This deadbolt is no exception. you may pay a little more for this product than some other brands. However, it comes with a lifetime warranty and the quality is there. It may be OK to skimp on an interior door. An exterior deadbolt is a place to get the very best. The package includes the deadbolt, trim, jamb plate, strike plate, 2 keys, and instructions. The only other tool you should need is a Phillips head screwdriver. You might need a drill and 1/8" bit too, to install the long screws that come with the strike plate. As with many Baldwin locks/knobs, this product is universal, so it will fit both a right and left hand door. NOTE: You should always confirm that the lock/knob you order will match your door configuration (universal/reversible or specific to a left/right hand door. I used this deadbolt, along with a matching Baldwin entry knob, to replace a set of Schlage locks. My Schlage products were only a couple of years old, and both my entry knob and deadbolt stopped working! They were lightly used, and cost only a little less than the Bladwin products. The difference in Baldwin quality is clear. The outside components such as the lever, locks, etc. are noticeably heavier. The internal parts and deadbolt are heavy duty. The Baldwin finishes are beautiful. Mine is Satin Nickel and arrived in perfect condition. I have the same finish on a Baldwin lock set that is exposed to the elements, and after about 4 years it still looks brand new. Installation is pretty straightforward. On a door with an existing deadbolt, you are probably looking at 20 minutes, if that, including removal of the old lock. The one place I think Baldwin could use just a little improvement is on instructions. If you've installed many locks and knobs, particularly theirs, installation is a breeze. But if you have done none, or even just a few over the years, their included instructions are basic. The general, as well as step by step SmartKey, instructions were easy to follow. I ran into one issue with the documentation. I ordered both this deadbolt and a matching keyed knob. These are sold separately, not as a kit, so they come with different keys, etc. However, the way my two locks shipped, if I installed them as packaged, one key cylinder would have been required I insert the key smooth side of the key up (right side up), and the other cylinder would have had the smooth side of the key down (as in the key would be "upside down" when I inserted it). I called Baldwin and they were able to walk me through how to rotate the cylinder on the keyed knob in a matter of seconds. To do so you need to remove a clip which is not mentioned in the instructions, nor does it jump out to the untrained eye. You do not have the option of rotating the cylinder on this deadbolt, only on the keyed knob. The rep did tell me that having the cylinders in different orientation did not affect functionality, which I get, but who wants two keyholes on the same door pointing in different directions? Fumbling in the dark, or rain, your child forcing a key in the wrong way - no thanks!. Their customer support was very knowledgeable and resolved my issue. I just think a little better documentation could save customers a phone call. Other than that one minor hiccup, these are some of the best lock/door knob products around. As far as SmartKey, it took literally one minute to rekey one key to match the other. If you own older or 'C' type model Baldwin keysets take note! I had hoped to rekey these new locks to match my four year old Baldwin lock. However, it appears the Smartkey technology actually comes from Kwikset (Black & Decker owns both Baldwin and Kwikset). Thus, Smartkey DOES NOT work with Baldwin 'C' keysets. You can check if your Baldwin keys are 'C' model: As long as they are actual, original Baldwin keys, check the key head. If `03' is stamped on it below the word Baldwin on either side, it is typically a C keyset and will not work with SmartKey. In the end, this is a superior deadbolt product. It is not that much more expensive than other products, and for the extra peace of mind having a entry lock which works extremely well and is durable, along with a fantastic warranty, I would absolutely recommend it.

Great lock, that has the ability to re-key without calling a locksmith, or taking the lock apart on changing the pins. For me that was the reason to buy it. Manufacturing quality/solidness feels a lot like a good Schlage rather than a junk lock like Kwik-set. No lock is "bump key proof" in my opinion, but this one certainly appears more resistant than other consumer locks in my opinion. Likewise, as a (very amateur) lock picker, this was hard enough that I gave up. Again, I'm sure someone will be able to pick it (in my "lock picking for fun" class a retired 80-something grandma was the "ace" who could get past any lock faster than the rest of us). Then again, thieves can also throw a rock through your window if they want in bad enough. This will certainly deter casual efforts to pick it. In the end though, now that the prices have come down on these the reason to buy is to be able to re-key it yourself whenever you want to.

This a heavy well made lock and it was easy to install. I bought several other Baldwin locks for other doors and used their smart key tool to key them all to the same key. The instruction to use their tool should be more explicit. Eventually figured it out, and then it was simple. Highly pleased with this product

I was rekeying and making more secure a new home purchase. New deadbolts were a necessary part of the project. I chose Baldwin because of their reputation and the opportunity to rekey easily. I am delighted. The installation was easy and the result is elegant.

I replaced the builder grade option the previous owners put in this place. This was super easy to rekey, has a solid feel to it, and locks very smoothly. There is no play in the like on other locks, meaning, you don’t have that “blank” space before the bolt actually starts to move. I also appreciate that they provided two extra long screws to go beyond the door jam for added security. If I needed to replace another deadbolt, I wouldn’t think twice about buying another one of these.
