The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer VHS

Doesn't Get Better Than This
Funny and charming, with Cary Grant at his best. Light fare with three "old" pros. Cary Grant, Myrna Loy and Shirley Temple (who let's face it was an "old pro" by the time she was five). Shirley did not get many great roles once she (unfortunately) grew up. But this was one of them. Watch the fun as a seventeen year old Shirley get's a mad crush on 30 something Cary and then is ordered my her Judge sister Myrna to "date" her till she tires of her infatuation. Supported by a great cast, Ray Collins, Harry Davenport, and Rudy Vallee you will be reminded why this was called Hollywood's "Golden Age".

An excellent cast and hilarious story
1947's "The Bachelor and the Bobby Soxer" has some of the funniest bits in it that I've seen. Myrna Loy plays Margaret Turner, a judge, with Shirley Temple playing her much younger sister Susan, a 17 year old high school student. Cary Grant comes in just a little while into the film in the role of Richard Nugent, painter of Americana and, unfortunately, the defendant in court on the charge of inciting a brawl.Things get going once he's let off the hook and has to give a lecture, in all places, at Susan Turner's high school. Susan starts to see him, literally, as her knight in shining armor and immediately takes a serious liking to him, even though he's old enough to be her father.I won't give away any more about the film as it's simply too funny to describe. Let's just say things go haywire in an orderly, disorderly fashion! Cary Grant has some hilarious bits in this film, especially when he's having a little fun at somebody's expense, which is fairly often. The supporting cast does a great job as well.I downloaded this version from Amazon Instant Video and the image quality is superb, as is the sound. Very clear in every detail. Using a quick downloading wireless internet connection, it was ready to watch in almost no time.I can't recall having seen this film before but was looking for something funny and taking the reviews here into consideration, I wasn't disappointed. If you want to watch a movie that is still as funny now as it probably was back in its day, I couldn't recommend this enough.

breezy comedy delight
THE BACHELOR AND THE BOBBY-SOXER is a breezy comedy delight which features an Oscar-winning screenplay by Sidney Sheldon.Following a nightclub brawl, artist Richard Nugent (Cary Grant) finds himself being reprimanded in court by Judge Margaret Turner (Myrna Loy). Margaret's teenage sister Susan (Shirley Temple) later forms a strong infatuation for Richard, so Margaret "sentences" him to date Susan until the crush runs it's natural course. Things get complicated when Richard starts falling for Margaret, and Susan starts talking about marriage!A surprise Academy Award winner for 'Best Original Screenplay' in 1947, THE BACHELOR AND THE BOBBY-SOXER is an irresistible screwball comedy with the brilliant star combination of Cary Grant and Myrna Loy--who went on to be paired the following year in "Mr Blandings Builds His Dream House". Shirley Temple puts in a fun performance as the lovestruck teen trying to act more mature. The cast also features Rudy Vallee, Ray Collins, Harry Davenport and Johnny Sands.Despite the fun exhibited on the screen, by all accounts the shoot was not a happy one for Cary Grant. He reportedly hated director Irving Reis (and wanted RKO to bring in Leo McCarey, with whom he'd just worked in "The Bishop's Wife"). Nevertheless, THE BACHELOR AND THE BOBBY-SOXER opened to rave reviews in 1947, and strong box-office receipts helped the struggling RKO Studios through a very lean financial period. The DVD release also features the Technicolor cartoon "Little Tinker", complete audio of the Lux Theater radio broadcast with Grant and Temple reprising their roles; and a Cary Grant trailer gallery. (Single-sided, dual-layer disc).

Very funny (but of course with Cary Grant, Myrna Loy & Shirley Temple)
Cary Grant as the bachelor, Shirley Temple as the Bobby Soxer and Myrna Loy as the judge and Shirley Temple's over protective sister.Grant gets into all kinds of mischief as an artist that ends up in Loy's court room for assault & battery charges in a club brawl, then gives an art lecture at Temple's school. Temple misunderstands Grant, ends up at his apt when Loy and the DA show up looking for Temple. Then the fun really begins as Grant tries to fulfill his court ordered sentence. This movie is one of the greatest made, it is such a refreshing comedy to watch after viewing the comedies made today that just leave you as unsatisfied as an empty box. There is always something to be said about the classics of yesteryear, besides always being family friendly.

Fun movie with great acting
Absolutely a delightful movie. You have 3 powerhouse actors together, so that is worth watching the movie for. The writing is good as it normally is with older movies and I love the comedy. The end is fantastic. If you're a fan of Grant or Loy, you should see this movie.

GARY GRANT & SHIRLEY TEMPLE call it: "THE GOOD, THE CLEAN AND THE WEIRD?"
Classic comedy. very off the wall. great characters. great actors. Grant is forced to date a teenage girl in public, as probation punishment when a teenage girl, Shirley Temple, breaks into is apartment to beg him paint her portrait . weird?

A fun, adorable little romp
This movie is fun and silly. Very enjoyable when you're just in the mood for some light-hearted fun or in need of cheering up. Because who could ever watch Shirley Temple as a silly, adorable teenager and not be cheered up?

Myrna Loy and Cary Grant great together!
The skit with "The man with the power of hoo-doo" best part of movie. Grandson even likes this and has skit memorized. You will love the part at the restaurant with one thing after another happening and poor Cary Grant just gets in more trouble.

Crush on an older man
Seventeen year old Susan Turner (Shirley Temple) lives with her older sister Margaret (Myrna Loy) who is a court judge, in a beautiful house in the countryside.Margaret becomes worried when Susan starts to develop a crush on forty year old bachelor Dick Nugent (Cary Grant). Susan finds the bachelor sophisticated and loves that he can paint pictures. She sees him as her knight in shining armour. When Susan is found in the apartment of Dick Nugent her sister and everyone else gets the idea that she was kidnapped by the bachelor.Dick is brought before the judge (who turns out to be Margaret!) She thinks up a way to cure Susan from this crush by convincing Dick Nugent to take her sister on as many dates as possible until Susan loses interest in him.The question is how long will that take?

My favourite farce ever!
Rare outing for teenaged Shirley Temple, but a fantastic ridiculous comedy. Oscar winning screenplay, origin of the 'You remind me of a man / what man...' thing, and both Cary Grant and Myrna Loy are excellent in this. This is my go-to film when I'm feeling poorly and tucked up on the sofa with a mug of chicken soup.

The Batchelor and The Bobby-Soxer DVD
This is one of Cary Grant's earlier films also co-starring Myrna Loy. It is a romantic comedy made in black and white; it also has the added bonus of Shirley Temple as the Judge's (Myrna Loy's) little sister. The casting is great and the film is entertaining throughout. The DVD was packaged well and arrived on time.
