Choose the right side!
I bought this mat, hoping for something with better grip. I read that one side is gripper than the other but falsely assumed which side is which. What looks like the smoother side, to me anyway, looked to have less texture but turned out to be the grippy side. If that description doesn't make sense, just try both sides before giving up on this mat.As described, it is grippy enough that I got caught on the mat a couple times during Vinyasa Flow, but it was worth it to be able to rest in downward facing dog comfortably. An added bonus, while this isn't as thick as my previous mat, it is actually softer and provides better cushioning on my knees. One thing I would like is a longer length. Otherwise, I am very happy with my purchase!Update: It's two months short of a year since I purchased this mat and it's beginning to stretch so much during my practice that I am looking to replace it. Meaning, even with a good grip in down dog, my hands and feet slide away from each other because the mat between them physically stretches. To be clear, I practice 4 to 5 times a week. If you don't practice that much, it should last longer for you.

I should have made the switch sooner
My yoga instructor complimented me today on how much I've improved in the past few weeks so I figured it was time to come on here and sing this mat's praises. Not sliding around makes that much of a difference. I've been taking classes off and on for close to 20 years. I've had a 2-3 time a week practice for the past 8 months. This is my third and final mat and I can't stress enough how much I wish I had made the change sooner.I hemmed and hawed because of the price. I'll admit it. The past couple times I started back up with yoga, I didn't find the right studio and my interest waned a few months in. Exercising at home with a video didn't seem to happen on a regular basis either. I couldn't justify spending so much on a mat if I wasn't sure I would use it for an extended period so I started out with a cheap mat. Needless to say, that didn't last long because I quickly realized I didn't have a 20 year old body any more and wanted a bit more cushioning. I then got a thicker 'premium' PVC mat advertised for being 'slip resistant' and 'sticky'. I stubbornly stayed with that one for 4 months because I paid good money for it and it was fairly comfortable even though my hands did keep sliding. Yoga can get really sweaty even if you aren't practicing hot yoga and the 'sticky' claims didn't hold true. That mat also started to fall apart at 3 months in and was annoying me to distraction by 4. Little flakes of PVC sticking to your hands and clothes does not bring on a zen-like calm. That was when I had my a-ha moment and decided to just get this mat already.I did my research. I liked what I read about rubber mats. I really liked what I read about this company. I took the plunge. I placed my order late one Saturday evening in December. By the time I got home from work on Tuesday, my new mat had arrived.I started taking it to class and felt the difference in my practice immediately. First off, I didn't slip... at all! Not even the first day I was using it. The studio I go to is small and usually crowded. There is a lot of body heat and more than a little sweat. I have never had a mat that I didn't slide on. It would usually be my hands starting to inch away from where they started in downward dog. This annoyance is completely gone now. My hands stay put. Without the fear (or reality) of sliding, I am able to hold the poses longer in better form. A difference noticeable to the point that my instructor actually commented on it...The other vast improvement over my old thick mat is the density of this one. My old mat was thick because that company pretty much pumped the material full of air. That made it thick but squishy. If you've ever tried balancing on one leg on a thick squishy mat, you know how well that works. Unless you have really strong ankles, it doesn't work at all. This mat is 5mm thick (which makes it nice for my knees and wrists) but dense enough that I don't have any issue doing balance poses on it. Yes the density and material make the mat about 3 times heavier than my old one but I'm considering that a fair trade off. I joke that I get a little extra workout carrying the mat to my studio.Thank you Rob - I know you're reading this :) The letter you sent with tips on washing the mat etc was highly appreciated. Best wishes for your company.

unfortunately not for me
I have been practising yoga for more than 10 years. When I started, more than 10 years ago, I bought a mat that has been perfect for me all these years. Unfortunately my mat is falling apart, so I decided to buy a new mat. I started with a cheap one that only lasted two hours. Then I decided to buy a good one and I bought tomuno because of the many good reviews and the promise that it is non-slip.I started to use tomuno two months ago and I am not happy with it, I am not happy at all. After spending so much money on a mat I really wanted it to work, but as soon as I start to sweat, even slightly, I start to slip on my mat. I can not even hold downward facing dog and I hold it perfectly on my old mat. I don't even feel comfortable while doing the prasaritas, my feet also slip.In order to feel secure and not to have to concentrate on the slipping I have started now to use tomuno (because of the cushioning) and my old mat on top of it.Unfortunately I will have to buy another mat. I hope I make a better choice next time.
