Not Airtight, Not Odor Proof
I tested these bags pretty thoroughly, and have come to the conclusion that they are neither airtight, nor odor proof. They are about equivalent to ziploc freezer bags in both these areas, although the plastic is significantly thicker, and therefore more durable. I have not tested whether they are waterproof. My test: I used esbit solid fuel cubes, which have a pretty strong smell, hence why I wanted an odor proof bag, and also to allow my weak human nose to detect odor coming through the bag. First, I thoroughly washed my hands. Then, I opened a regular ziploc bag with my bare hands, and propped it open on a desk. Then I donned new nitrile gloves, and placed several cubes of solid fuel (still in their original packaging of foil-sealed bubble packs) into the open bag, without touching the outside of the bag. Then I removed the nitrile gloves and discarded them without ever touching the outside of the gloves (aseptic technique). Then, with my bare hands, sealed the ziploc bag without touching the inside (where the cubes were). So now I had a ziploc bag with cubes inside, and no contamination on the outside. I then put this bag into an opsak, removed excess air, and sealed the opsak. I then put the opsak into another ziploc bag, removed excess air, and sealed it. This outer bag increases the concentration of odor molecules outside the opsak, to allow me to smell small amounts coming through the opsak. I waited several days, and then came back to the three-layer bag. First, I noticed that air had gotten into the opsak, because it was slightly inflated from how I left it. Then I opened the outer ziploc bag, without opening the opsak, and I could smell the strong odor of the esbit cubes. Thus, there is clearly air exchange allowing air to get into the opsak, and odor to get out of the opsak. I repeated this experiment, making absolutely sure to securely seal all three bags and cause no contamination, and also did the same with other smellables, all with the same results.I know there are plenty of people who say that being able to smell things through these bags is likely just contamination of the outside of the bag, but I was careful with handling, and I am very familiar with lab and medical work, and know how to maintain a sterile barrier, thus not contaminating my hands, or the outside of the bag, with odor particles. I am confident that these bags are not odor proof. If you are trying to keep food away from animals, remember that their noses are much more sensitive than ours, and only truly odor proof barriers will stop them.
