Very Good, not quite 5 stars
"The Death of a Mafia Don" (DMD), 4 1/2 stars, is the third in a series of six books by Italian Michele Giuttari about Michele Ferrara, a Florence based police officer. Ferrara is seriously injured in a car bombing, and while he is recovering, his team investigates the incident and soon discovers a Mafia connection. There is soon another assassination attempt but on another official, and this one is successful bringing more pressure on the team and Ferrara out of the hospital. At this point, the focus shifts to a horde of Mafia characters (you might want to take notes on names and places). The pace and tension are good, and the characters are well drawn, but I must admit it got a bit confusing for me as there were a number of twists and a number of agendas. But I am presuming that was the author's intention - to give the reader a sense of the investigator's frustrations in trying to get a clear picture of events. Then there was a scene that made me think I was watching a clip from the tail end of "The Godfather" (not that there's anything wrong with that, actually it was rather well done). This is my first Giuttari book and I will read others - perhaps books 4, 5, 6 for starters since I've jumped into the middle of the series and know some character history. Close to 5 stars but no cigar.

Fantastic twist, solid writing
This is the third Michele Guittari book that I've read. He sometimes gets bogged down in police procedure (the first quarter of the book was slow) and the writing is sometimes a bit pedestrian (hard to know if that's the translation though), but he managed to pull off one heck of an amazing twist in this book, and the latter third of the book was a real page-turner. Highly recommend, particularly if you'd like to know more about the Italian police.

Loved it!
Enjoy Giuttari's writing and have read all of his books. The title always refers to one death as though only one person dies, but when you get into the book, lots of people die. Michael Connelly is my favorite crime author and I consider Giuttari to be the Italian Michael Connelly.

Great suspense
I would recommend to anyone who loves Italian crime/mystery novels; The author obviously knows his subject and keeps the reader's interest not only on the story but the setting. I will definitly read Giuttari's other novels.

The best Michele Giuttari I've read
I've read four of Giuttari's mysteries and this is the best ever in plot and character development. He provides a nice view of Italy and Italian police administration, politics, and methods of operation.

An absorbing story
This is the best of the series so far. Sitting at home looking at the wind and rain outside it was still easy to imagine myself in the Italian sunshine. Very good story with enough mystery to keep me guessing. Perhaps a bit contrived in places but not so much as to spoil the story. If you haven't read any other Michele Ferrara books I recommend that you read them in order. Thoroughly recommended.

I enjoyed this
I started off with a copy of Book 2 in the series which probably wasn't the best way to start but it didn't seem to matter much. I read the paperback I had picked up somewhere then downloaded Books 1&3 on my Kindle and whizzed through the lot. Very good little series, along the lines of Montalbano. I enjoyed them.

Worth reading
I wish I had started this series of books with the 2 before this one. I found it on the swap shelf in our local bar/cafe. I have since ordered 3 more of this series. The author's personal knowledge of the subject covered makes the books even more interesting.
