the four books are a good beginning to getting started in calligraphy. At times, I questioned why some characters were introduced thinking that there are certainly easier characters to start with. Bought the set for two reasons: one for the included brush, two because of the rewritable paper that allows you to use water over and over again because it definitely requires much practice to become a novice calligrapher.The books are written in Chinese so I just followed the line drawings as best I could. The characters are merely there to practice the various strokes and not to teach you what the character means. You are practicing calligraphy, that is all.If you want to learn how to read, this is not the book for you. For calligraphy practice, you can not beat using water to write and not having to buy paper. The water dissolves to let you rewrite in the same spot, how many times I have yet to reach the maximum write times yet. This is a good basic introduction to calligraphy practice.

Pro: it's easy to follow with four styles.Con: brush starts to shed after a few uses, not sure how long it will last...

Would give more stars but the books smell like mold or mildew as if they were used before or just accumulated moisture from being in the package. I’m allergic to mold and cannot use these. But it is a good product otherwise.

Given as a gift to a teen who does not have prior experience with Chinese calligraphy. Now I need a book to teach her some basics, so she can use my gift.

These are really fun for kids and it's so nice that they are reusable!
