Erika Marozsán, I mean, the actress who plays the role of Ilona, a waitress in an elegant Budapest restaurant in the years just before and during the Nazi occupation of Hungary. I don't often feel that it's entirely good manners to rhapsodize about a woman's beauty, and it's rarely a determining factor in my appreciation of a serious film. But Ilona's drop-dead beauty combines with her simplicity and vulnerability to make the romance of "Gloomy Sunday" plausible. Ilona has two lovers, the first her ordinary-looking mild-mannered boss and the second the moodily handsome piano player at the restaurant. Some conflict occurs, some jealousy, some rejections, but inevitably the two men accept that Ilona "needs both" of them. The boss says it: "half an Ilona is better than no Ilona at all."It might seem that "Gloomy Sunday" begins as a remake of "Jules et Jim", a film about a beautiful love-triangle, bound to have a heart-breaking finish. And so it will, but not before the film transforms into a remake of "Schindler's List" with a bitterly ironic reversal. The Schindler-prototype is a young German who comes to the restaurant before the outbreak of the War, falls in love with Ilona, attempts suicide when she gently refuses him, is rescued by Lazlo, the restauranteur, and reappears with the Wehrmacht as a major officer in the Occupation. That role is performed by Ben Becker, an Oscar-worthy performance as a man torn between halting sensitivity and bottomless corruption. That this brutal characterization of a German "soul" could be offered, in a German film with a German director, should not go unapplauded.Lazlo is a Jew, a fact that hadn't weighed on his mind before the onslaught of the Nazi 'Final Solution'. His restaurant serves pork and stays open on the Sabbath. Lazlo is above all a "Mensch", a German word that in Yiddish describes a person with a big heart. The pianist, András, is Hungarian, a composer who regards himself as a failure until he writes a single song without lyrics, Gloomy Sunday, which becomes an international hit, making him and Lazlo's restaurant both famous. Lazlo is played by Joachim Krol and András by Stefano Dionisi; both are superlative in their roles.Erika/Ilona is beautiful, Budapest is beautiful (it really is; I've been there), the cinematography is gorgeous, the song is haunting, and the romance is heart-breakingly beautiful, too. It's almost a dilemma of 'cognitive dissonance' that such a beautiful film should portray such intolerably vile and tragic realities. It's the dissonance between beauty and calamity which András expresses in his music yet can't express in words.

I do not write long reviews, so to the pint. This is without doubt a really superb movie. Original and most interesting plot, great acting and a beautiful young actress. It takes palce in Budapest during the Second World War. It is about fraternal love, passionate love, ingratitude and Nazi corruption. About a woman who can not decide between two suitors. so she chooses tham both and everybody is happy. As one of them remarks; "it is better to have a halve a woman that not at all..." Pay great attention at the end.I give this movie 4 1/2 stars, five stars I reserve for that extraordinary masterpiece of cinema, that comes about every fifty years or so. Enjoy!

I've been fascinated by the song "Gloomy Sunday" since the days of my youth in the 1950's. and as an avid amateur musician have always been fascinated by both the tune and wondering how such a tune is technically musically constructed - alas, I've always been something of a musical fauve so have the musical sense to make good music on a number of instruments, but perhaps for that reason have always been too much of a slug to learn much about the technical/mathematical aspects of music, or perhaps having heard a lot of these musically knowledgeable people play (including a Julliard trained female trombonist) and heard little music in their playing I wanted to escape that fate. In any event, from my ignorant vantage point I opine "minor key" to start, a beautiful result. Since there are an infinite number of possible combinations of musical notes, etc. I guess one just has to be enough of a genius, or lucky enough, to pick one like this unique tune of sadness and happiness.So, while I recognize that the movie takes liberties with the facts it's still a great yarn, with memorable characters (one of whom is a more than beautiful woman) at a memorable time with some memorable twists, which I won't advert to so as not to spoil it, including one some criticize, which I think is absurd. Suffice it to say that one strong message I get from the film is also a strong one in many of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales ( which I've been re-reading lately in the excellent Frank Ernest Hill modern English translation which I recommend highly) that if one wants to have a good and happy life let the good woman in your life largely run it and be the winner - wisdom from the 1390's which resonated strongly and positively in this great film.

Gloomy Sunday is a German movie set and filmed in Budapest that is set in a period of the late 1930s - during World War 2 late 1990s. It starts in the late 1930s where a Jewish Restaurant owner and his Beautiful Waitress are madly in love and have a great relationship. They meet a German man ( played by Ben Becker) who also falls in love with the Waitress, IIona and she also falls for him while remaining in love with the Restaurant owner, Laszlo. When the War breaks out and Hungry is under Nazi occupation, the German friend returns as a high ranking Nazi Officer and he uses his position to have IIona all for himself and to get Laszlo out of the way for good!. If you enjoy Love triangle movies then Gloomy Sunday is worth watching.

Hallo zusammen!Ich muss zuallererst erwähnen: Ich hasse das Deutsche Kino. Ich bin 25 Jahre alt, und bislang habe ich in meinem gesamten Leben keinen deutschen Film gesehen, der mich auch nur annähernd begeistern konnte. Wie kam es, dass ich diesen Film sah? Es war einzig die Liebe zu diesem unglaublich schönen Lied...Der Inhalt wurde schon oft genug wiedergegeben, weswegen ich meine gesamte Rezension kurz fassen möchte. Die Geschichte dieses Films ist wunderschön inszeniert, die gesamte Filmmusik ist unglaublich und man wünscht sich auch nach dem Film noch das ein oder andere Stück zu hören. Jeder einzelne Darsteller in dem Film bringt eine unglaubliche Leistung und, auch wenn ich ihn nicht mag, besonders Ben Becker überzeugt in dieser beinahe schon 'Doppelrolle'. Ist er anfangs schon verstörend schüchtern, stellt er den Wandel zum 'Nazi' eindrucksvoll dar. Und, ich als Mann kann das ohne Probleme sagen, die Hauptdarstellerin ist einfach traumhaft schön.Einziger Kritikpunkt von mir ist die 'Akzeptanz' der drei Hauptdarsteller in dem Film. Meiner Meinung nach wird nicht ausreichend begründet, dass beide Männer diese Dreiecksbziehung akzeptieren können, und auch der Schmerz, den sie dabei empfinden, wird nicht ausreichend 'erläutert'.Was ich letzten Endes sagen möchte: Wenn jemand, der mit deutschen Darstellern und Filmen überhaupt nichts anzufangen weiß, diesen Film liebt, dann muss er einfach gut sein. Wer sich eine schöne Geschichte, traumhafte Musik, großartige Bilder und eine geniale Kameraführung zu Gemüte führen möchte, der sollte sich diesen Film ansehen.

Dieser Film hat alles, was ein melancholischer Sonntag-DVD-Nachmittag braucht: fantastische Schauspieler, eine tief bewegende Geschichte und zum wegträumen schöne Musik. Das Lied von Liebe und Tod - szomorú vasárnap (trauriger Sonntag)- ist bildgewaltig, tragisch und komisch zugleich, ist großes Kino mit doppeltem oder dreifachem Boden; eine kluge Balance zwischen der Dreiecks-Liebesgeschichte, der Musik, die immer in den Vordergrund spült, und der realen Geschichte der 30er und 40er Jahre mit ihrem Leid, ihren Dramen, wird immer gehalten. Keine schwarz-weiß Charaktere; und am Ende gibt es einen wunderbar leisen, leichten, überraschenden Showdown. Ich habe mir mehr als einmal die Tränen verkniffen, bis es am Ende keinen Sinn mehr hatte. Großes Kino. Und nebenbei wunderbar eingefangen dieses seltsame magyarische Naturell, von dem Tibor Déry mal sagte: "Was ist das Ungarische? Ein Witz, der über Katastrophen tanzt."

Das Angebot war auch zu schön, um wahr zu sein. Habe den Film nicht erhalten, aber das Geld zurück erstattet bekommen. Schade.Den Film habe ich früher mal gesehen, der ist traurig, aber sehenswert.

Wir sehen uns den Film als DVD immer wieder an, weil wir uns an der Hauptdarstellerin, Erika Marozsán, nicht satt sehen können. Das ausgezeichnete Drehbuch ist von einer Frau, das ist deutlich zu spüren. Die Schauspieler sind ausgezeichnet ausgewählt. Der Film vermittelt einen vermutlich ganz richtigen Eindruck der deutschen Verbrechen in Ungarn und die Kooperation mit den Ungarischen Nazis der damaligen Epoche. Technisch ist der Film ebenfalls gut gemacht.

meine mutter hat mir vorige woche den film inclusive den soundtack empfohlen , wir telefonierten und sie sagte sie wolle mir etwas laufen lassen , da sie wissen würde das es mir gefällt . und sie behielt recht . das lied vom traurigen sonntag , war mir bis dato unbekannt muß ich als BEKENNENDER UNGAR gestehen , wahscheinlich weil ich hier in deutschland kaum ungarn kenne und in ungarn selbst leider zu selten bin .als ich aber die ersten klänge der typischen tonalen ungarischen art hörte (sei es die pianoversion oder auch die klassischen , sowie gecoverten versionen) , fühlte ich es birgt ungarische traditionen und ist ein unmißverständlich ein teil aus ungarn . die daraus resultierende selbstmordrate ist zwar traurig , aber man darf das lied und den text nicht verurteilen , denn eine neigung zu extremitäten besteht schon länger , nicht erst durch ein lied/film/bild e.t.c. auf jedenfall bin ich mit diesem lied und auch dem film der 1999 dazu gedreht wurde 100% bedient . ich bin ein typisch stolzer vertreter der ungarischen wurzel und auch in sachen romantik und oder leidenschaft dem ganzen sehr innig verbunden und nicht zuletzt nah am wasser gebaut wenn es darum geht . es steht also außer frage das daß das thema zum lied vom traurigen sonntag (soundtrack und film nicht zuletzt der original ursprung) vollkommen von mir belobigt wird .der inhalt des films ist zwar etwas anders ,aber er trifft dennoch den sinn der liedes und verfehlt es in keinster weise , selbst wenn das drehbuch nochmals anders geschrieben worden wäre . der film ansich ist sehr gut und berührt (mich zumindest) sehr . man sollte eine ander für diese art von trauer haben , sowie vertändniß dafür das es mehr gibt als nur das profilieren in einer gegenwärtigen modernen zeit , die überflutet ist von oberflächlichkeit .der film ist zu empfehlen , wie die musik , für mich ein stück kultur oder heimat und die ungarn sind dafür bekannt melancholie in romantik zu vermischen ,.... was aber immernoch besser ist als überhaupt nichts für emotionen übrig zu haben.menschen die mit trauer und sehnsucht nach frieden oder lieben umgehen können , das mag nun leicht gesagt sein da es immer schwer ist kummer zu haben , die werden in dem soundtrack und film eine begleitung finden und sich nicht zu sehr unverstanden fühlen in ihrem ineren wirwar der gefühle .das lied vom traurigen sonntag , eine 100%ige fundamentale ebene von gefühlen ."
