An Elephant In the Living Room The Children's Book

Think About This: There Is An Elephant in the Room and No One Is Saying a Word About the Elephant!
Children who learn how to express their feelings will be able to talk about uncomfortable topics. They will also learn thatit is preferable to verbalize their honest feelings and initiate discussions on topics of relevance rather than stuff their feelings and cause further damage to their little psyches. The book addresses issues of alcohol use by one parent and the profound effect it has on children. It helps parents and other family members to learn how to deal with these issues. I recommend this book for any person who is aware of alcoholism in any family. It can only help to prepare you to help the child and the family. C. Castagna

Bought for our niece
We bought this to read to our niece when she visits. We were nervous she wouldn't like the idea of it, but she warmed right up and it was so easy for her to understand. It stimulated questions we could answer and gave her a sense we are on her side.Thank you for a great find!

Excellent book to help kids deal with all kinds of addiction!
This is an excellent book for solo or small group use. My 8-year-old and I have learned a lot together. Nice variety of information, activities, and reflections. Graphics and font look a bit dated or it would get 5 stars.

Sensitive and clear
This book is for children, but even adults dealing with a loved one with a substance abuse problem can learn a lot from it. It is very positive and conveys to children that substance abuse and the behavior resulting from it are not normal, and are an illness. This book does not condemn the addict, but focuses on how the child SHOULD be treated by loved ones and how they, in turn, should show love and respect to others. Its illustrations and exercises are inviting and accessible, and its message is positive and clear. I would recommend this book to any family dealing with addiction or abuse.

Should be part of the school curriculum
An excellent, simple introduction to the devestating effects of living with an alcoholic or drug addict. This is such a widespread problem in today's society. It is easier to cope with something when there is an awareness of what is really going on. This book is written in such a way that not only is it of use to young people, it is of use to anyone of any age who has been subjected to the insanity that exists when someone you love is out of control. I have read many adult books on the subject. It is important that there exists a children's book that opens the door to understanding the nature of the problem and offers simple coping tools.

I ordered for the children we are adopting from child protective services in order to help them deal with their bio mom's addiction issues. I wish that the subject matter was broader, i.e. it focuses on alcoholism and only briefly mentions drug addiction.

Great conversation starter for emotional trauma/issues
My son is 8 years old, and his father is a recovering addict. This book was a great conversation starter for all the emotional issues that come from dealing with an addict. This book is set up in group format to be used with the teachers book. We just used the workbook and modified it to what worked for us. It's not an end all, be all, but I found it opened the door for him to talk to me about any questions/concerns/fears etc without me leading the conversation. Good luck to any who happen upon this book!
