How to See Faeries
So young wizards and witches do you wanna see faeries? Well if you are a young adult or a serious practitioner then this book might not be the book for you. Quite frankly I am a bit surprised as John Matthews is an expert on Celtic and faerie lore. Brian Froud is world renowned for his faerie art work. I was somewhat shocked as I expected a bit more substance.Yet to be fair this is an excellent children's book and I am talking young elementary school children. The writing is simplistic and cute , perfect appeal for kindergarten through 2and grade. The art work from Brian Froud as awesome as always, and maybe that alone is worth the price of the book. There are some excellent portal drawings which if you meditate on them serious wizard or witch you just might be able to enter the realm of the faeries. Now the purchase is not a total loss, as you do learn a few things about being able to see faeries. First off always speak in rhymes, faeries love rhymes. The next thing you need to know is that there are no rules when it comes to seeing faeries. The third is thing is slow down and take the time to see faeries, they are everywhere but we are just too rushed to noticed. The faeries are there, located in those liminal spaces and times. Perhaps at sunset and sunrise trooping to and fro. Check beneath the and in between the leave maybe they are hiding there. Let us not forget that their world occupies the same space as ours. They are tricky little fellows.

Strange and Wonderful, Like Faerie Itself
Here is the most curious little tome. Matthews and Froud's book is a Lewis Carroll-esque romp through the mirror into the otherworld of Faerie. I read it and thoroughly enjoyed it, but the real magic started when my eight year son picked up the book. His experience of the book was tactile and very immediate...he ran his fingers over the spirals as he read, spoke to the characters, walked through the book WITH the art and text. Here is an eight year old's review, in his own words:"This book sucked me in! When you start reading it, you shrink down to the size of your hand and have to walk through the book, from one portal to another. And you can't get out until you come to the last portal...which is reading the book all the way through. Each word you read glows blue. When all the words are blue, the last portal opens and you're out and done. Until next time! The book is filled with Faerie secrets, but they are so magic, I can't really remember them. The faeries are very realistic, I can tell you that! One looked just like a real one I've seen, so I know the faeries in the book are real ones."Adults who love colorful, wondrous faeries and clever prose will adore this book. For children (and those young at heart), here is a key to the gate at the bottom of the garden. I (and my son) highly recommend this book. There really is nothing else quite like it!

One of the best Froud releases...
The media could not be loaded. Β I have been a huge fan of the Froud family's artistic capabilities and have purchased all of Wendy and Brian Froud's art books. I pre- ordered this book the moment I saw it appear on Amazon's pages and I can easily say that next to the original "Faeries" book, this is one of my favorites. This book has a better layout than "Goblins" or "Good Faeries/Bad Faeries". The pages are lush with artwork and you can just stare at each page for minutes on end with finding something new around the bend each time. There isn't really any information on the artist, or really any interesting stories, just kind of a funky guide to "seeing" faeries. It is a bit of light reading, nothing serious and you can see plenty of interesting art-- some of it strange, others creepy and some quite beautiful. There are some activities inside of the book such as the 3D pop up of a faery stage, the pull out towards the back, and pages that have holes helping you see another page through different eyes. This book is the most fun release and the pages are beautiful and glossy. I would easily recommend this for all ages, anyone that's a fan of fantasy or a huge fan of the Frouds.

Children's Book At Best...
I love Brian Froud... I have all his Lady Cottington books (aside from the smells one - it seemed a tad too gross for me) and I have his other Fairie books. I was excited when I saw this because it was Brian Froud and it had little pop-ups, doors, etc., hey, I'm a kid at heart! I like those kind of things! Based on several reviews it sounded wonderful. I bought it, I returned it. The pictures seemed to be a bit repeated from his previous work, the doors, pop-ups, etc. were mediocre compared to other books of it's kind (I like elaborate pop up books) and the story... snooze fest. It's done in riddles and rhyme with one fairy talking to another who are talking you and well, it just feels flat. On top of that, Amazon said this was a "brand new" book, but it came with a remainder mark (black ink across the top or bottom of the pages which indicated it was either used or overstock from a bargain book warehouse) and it looked used. I exchanged it immediately w/o reading it and the second one came, I read it and realized it too had a remainder mark, but on the top, not the bottom and the black ink had bled onto the pages. If you are selling a brand new book, there shouldn't be any black lines on them, it's a dead giveaway you are being supplied by a whole seller/overstock company who gets slightly damaged books in general. I've bought from them before! Very disappointed in Amazon for the first time and with the book. I don't recommend, except maybe for a child and even then, eh. I gave it two stars for Brian Froud's art work, but 1 1/2 would have been better.

woooo, my goodness, another fine make believe book. a wonderful "trip" I had reading and looking through this, no need to take drugs, you can go on a wonderful journey just by taking a look through this book. Be seven again, dance with the little folk, but be aware, not all are sweet!Buy it, and escape this boring world.

Excellent escapist entertainment
Bought for daughter but read by wife and me as well, this is an excellent antidote for today's world of reality. Nothing wrong with some fantasy when gentle and non-violent. This hits the mark perfectly, whether you "believe" or not. Those who don't - lighten for God's sake - those who do - don't judge the simplicity. Just enjoy it.

Pop-up faerie book suitable for adults.
Beautifully illustrated book with a few small surprises hidden under the pop-ups. I would recommend this book to adult lovers of faeries and fantasy, but younger readers may be a little scared. Keep away from small children and sticky fingers too. I will buy another one for my sister as a Christmas gift.
