A colorful and detailed slice of Japanese life
Tokyo on Foot sits in my bookcase within easy reach and I loved it and every time I re-read it I wished that Mr Chavouet would draw and write about Japan again. It's been years since that first publication and Manabe Shima, his second book, does not disappoint. The colors, the humor, the facial expressions, the cat of the day, all the details so vibrantly captured. No wonder his books take so many years to be completed & translated into English! This is my Christmas present to myself and I love it. There are so many tiny details, a list of cat delinquents, a crab fight, pictures of udon, descriptions of many different wonderful locals, and that specific page of the woods showing the cacophony of natural sounds. Florent's skills with colors and shading, his humor and sweetness; it's an excellent book! And while you may not think you know someone who is interested in a French guy's perspective of a small island village in Japan depicted in graphic memoir style, this isn't a topic as obscure as it may seem. It is so well done, so charming and so much fun! It's such a wondeful little book that I'm already pining for his next one. Salut Florent, merci!

Fun and cartoony travelog
I am a third generation Japanese American; very westernized, not too Japanese. I loved Florent's first book, Tokyo on Foot - about a French [vagabond, for lack of a better word] making his way around the neighborhoods around Tokyo. A cartoony travelog of buildings and people-watching.This second book sets his eye on the rural life of a not too well traveled island off the coast of Japan. Where the last book was filled with people watching, this one treats the inhabitants like the characters in a comical serial.Flip through this book, find a random page, and take a day-trip to a simple Japanese village. If you are looking for family reading, exposing your kids to outside cultures, then this is a fun book, full of cartoony illustrations. There is scattered minor language and the presence of a few heavy drunks - so appropriate for slightly older kids or progressive households.Which book should you get? While I enjoy both, it boils down to the question of whether you are a city mouse or a country mouse.

Great sketch quality and full of nice details
Really nice and detailed drawings and an eye for the special things in Japan.Probably even more enjoyable when you have been to Japan.A nice picture book for relaxing. Good for reading just 2 pages a day or even coming back to certain sections again and discover new little details.Well sketched and observed! I also highly recommend his book about Tokyo.

Great book
Absolutely great book if you like sketching style illustration. I love it. I read the authors first book "Tokyo on foot" and having been in Tokyo twice, I could relate to a lot of the drawings. This book was even better as I have never been to this island. Very entertaining !

Decepcionante

Small world shown large
This book is the exact opposite of Tokyo on Foot. Instead of life if the big city it's a heartwarming story of life and the people on a tiny island in the Inland Sea. It's a glimpse into a different Japan and the hand-drawn pictures are more interesting and exciting than any photo could be.

First of all I really love his drawing style
First of all I really love his drawing style, secondly he manages to capture theexperience of visiting Japan in a lot of small details. Although I have never beento Manabeshima a lot of the drawings are very recognizable and make me think backof my own visits to Japan
