I have logs on a rack and I spread it about an inch think all around and as far under it as I could. The most pleasant side effect is that the glass generates heat and my fireplace puts out more warmth. I love the glass. One box may not be enough. I bought two. **Q: Can I use it in an indoor natural gas fireplace?** A: Yes you can - depending on they style of gas fireplace. It can be used to replace the lava rocks which typically are included as a bed in the fireplace. If you have a gas log fireplace with the burning embers look (a soft material under the logs which glow like embers when lit), you do not want to replace or change the material which glows like the embers. If you want, you can send me a picture of your fireplace and I can advise.
