Holy Smoke! [DVD]

This is a strangely beautiful film- a film as mesmerizing as the religious ecstasy that touches Ruth and the romantic love that seizes PJ. The Campion sisters are making an interesting comparison here, a comparison from which the movie takes its name: that there is a similar captivating force in both romantic love and religion, and that both are like getting smoke in your eyes. Rationality becomes secondary to overwhelming conviction.This film had so many finely wrought moments that I occasionally exclaimed out loud, "Brilliant!" One such moment is when Harvey Keitel's character, PJ Waters, the cult exiter, swaggers into the film via the Sydney airport with his tight jeans, black shirt, cowboy boots, and sunglasses. We see a gaggle of people surrounding the luggage carts as they make futile attempts to dislodge them from one another. The crowd separates as the gum-chewing PJ approaches and effortlessly extracts the carts, artfully twirling them toward grateful and awed travellers. We understand instantly that this is a man to be reckoned with.Yes, I cried watching this film. But not only for the pity I felt for Ruth and P.J., but for the film's general excellence. Acting like this made me wonder at the whole of film making, made me feel proud at human accomplishments. Winslet gives us a Ruth that is rich, multi-layered, powerful and vulnerable at the same time. Keitel is a courageous actor: you'll know what I mean when you see the red dress. These are first-rate performances, and I feel grateful to have witnessed them.

Need I say more? Great movie!

It was well acted by the two stars,but it's a story written more like gossip than anything else

Acting is OK, but the story gets rather silly and unrealistic at times. Kate W. sure likes to take her clothes off. Nice body, but it's not necessary. Just another characteristic of our R rated Hollywood.

Holy Smoke! is first and formost a wry, sensual showcase of the fearless, exciting talent of Kate Winslet. She and Harvey Keitel are both excellent in their respective portrayals of a young woman under the sway of a religion her parents don't understand and the professional deprogrammer sent to turn her back into the woman her family knows and loves. The energy and flavor of New Zealand make a fine backdrop for this darkly humorous tale. The movie is gorgeous to look at, the cast is excellent all around and the twisty turns of the story will take you on a ride with a sensibility all it's own. And did I mention the sexiness of Kate Winslet?

I've watched this movie time and time again. Two of my favorite actors on the planet! Yay, Aussies!

I assumed incorrectly that any movie with Harvey Keitel in it would be fantastic. This movie was TERRIBLE. I have no clue what was trying to be told in this story between a young confused brainwashed woman and her middle aged cult deprogrammer (Keitel).After Winslet pees all over herself I knew I was at the end of my rope and this movie was a huge waste of time. The storyline went no where, the characters were ridiculous, Keitel is unconvincing and Winslet loves being naked just a little too much. If you like freaks and idiots and wasting 2 hours then watch this by all means. I'd rather do anything else. I'll definitely avoid Campion movies in the future.

I thought this movie would be more about how a young woman leaves a cult. This was instead about how a young woman leaves a cult and the the person that deprograms her starts an inappropriate relationship with her. I know that this was intentional and shows how he was guilty of doing the same thing the young woman was doing but I didn't like it, I also was irritated by her family. Again I know this was intentional but I just didn't care for it at all. It wasn't awful but I didn't like it. I know that the director was female but it felt like it was done with a male gaze. Was that intentional too? If so I still didn't like it. I say skip this one

Mi è arrivato direttamente dall'Irlanda, in ottime condizioni e abbastanza presto. Non riesco più a vedere i film doppiatti in italiano, quindi per le fissate come me è l'ideale. Questa versione è dotata anche di sottotitoli in inglese. La voce di kate Winslet è magica e la colonna sonora indimenticabile, classici anni 70 e travolgenti pezzi rock tipo You oughta know di Alanis Morissette...atmosfere indianeggianti, colori accesi dell'Australia più vera, l'ironia tipica della Campion e un erotismo raffinato. Assolutamente un capolavoro, da troppi sottovalutato. Da riscoprire!

Strangely compelling odd ball film which is definately different . Winslet is brilliant and extremely sexy and Keitel is creepy and definately unforgetable in his red dress ! This isnt necessarily an easy film to watch , who is programming who ? Who is the guru , who is the gullible ? A hidden gem . Definately left me with a lot to think about afterwards .

Warum der Film hier in Deutschland nicht aufgeführt wurde, ist für mich vollkommen unverständlich. Die Kritiken auf diversen Internetseiten waren überschäumend vor Begeisterung. Und mit Kate Winslet, Harvey Keitel und Jane Campion (Regie) gab es außerdem 3 gewichtige Gründe für Sehenswertes. Der Film liegt mir jetzt schon zu sehr am Herzen. Die 20jährige Ruth, gespielt von Kate Winslet (zusammen mit ihrem Part in "Vergiss mein nicht" ihre beste Rolle und in keinem anderen Film sah sie besser aus) ist in die Fänge eines Gurus geraten, während sie in Indien Urlaub macht. Ihre Freundin kann sich von der Sekte lösen und fliegt zurück in die Heimat, nach Australien, wo sie Ruths Eltern über ihre Tochter aufklärt. Sofort fliegt die Mutter zu ihr und schafft es unter dem gespielten Vorwand, dass ihr Vater zuhause im Sterben liegt, sie zum Rückflug zu überreden. Ruth will sich nur kurz von ihm verabschieden und dann zurückfliegen. Sie erfährt, dass ihr Vater bei bester Gesundheit ist. Von ihrer Familie und ihren Freunden wird sie festgehalten und in die Hände eines mehr als lässigen, scheinbar überlegenen, Macho mäßigen Spezialisten (Harvey Keitel) übergeben. Er soll ihr den falschen Glauben austreiben und hat dafür ein 3tägiges Programm ausgearbeitet. In einer australischen Einöde, auf einer kleinen Farm, fernab jeglicher Zivilisation muss Ruth mit ihm leben. Eine Geschlechterbeziehung unter sehr emotionalen Gesichtspunkten nimmt langsam aber sicher ihren Lauf. In den ersten 2 Tagen scheint noch alles gut zu gehen, P.J. bleibt cool, obwohl sich Ruth's lebhafter, verrückter aber auch unsicherer Charakter immer wieder mit derben Launen gegen den Austreiber" PJ Waters wehrt. Doch schon am 3. Tag des gemeinsamen Zusammenlebens hat Ruth PJ, ob nun unbewußt oder nicht, so weit gebracht, dass er ihr verfällt. Statt Religion kommt der Sex zum Tragen. Die Kräfteverhältnisse nehmen eine 180 Grad Wendung. Ruth genießt ihre Macht. Sie treibt seine Abhängigkeit auf die Spitze, versucht ihn dann aber zu stoppen, versucht sich sogar zu entschuldigen. Aber sie hat bereits ein Monster geschaffen. Und tiefste Abgründe kommen ins Spiel und dann auch noch die Liebe. Das Chaos erreicht einen Höhepunkt nach dem anderen. Kann das Ganze gut enden? Wohl nicht, oder?Kate Winslet agiert in ihrer Rolle so verdammt genial, als ob es tatsächlich um ihr Leben ginge. Sie spielt mit einer Authentizität, die ganz und gar sprachlos und zitternd macht (Nein, ich übertreibe nicht). Und Harvey Keitel schafft die Wandlung vom Cool guy zum Häufchen Elend spielend. Ein paar Prisen Humor und Ironie sind sehr gut in das Drama eingestreut. Alles passt zusammen. Bitte bestellt alle diesen Film. Er wird euch gefallen, auch wenn ihr keine Kate Winslet-Fan seid. Obwohl, nach diesem Event werdet auch ihr so wie P.J. Waters und ich dieser Iconic Beauty" verfallen sein. Und es gibt kein Zurück. WOW!!!!!
