Disappointed
I cannot maintain my interest in the book. It is not fast paced enough for me, and I cannot connect to the characters. David Churchill is a good writer, but his writing style is not the writing style that I enjoy. I very much miss Wilbur Smith, my favorite author. I miss the breakneck speed of his plots, and I miss every single paragraph being crammed full of historical information. And, yes, I even miss his lack of character development for females, lol. I realize Wilbur Smith is aging and may not write a book alone again, and for that I am sad. I don't think I will ever find another Wilbur Smith, so I will be re-reading his older books.

Forget it.
Does not stand up to Wilbur Smith's other novels and I've read all of them. This one does not peak your interest or even keep you mildly captivated. He appears to have written this novel as a requirement by his publishers. After his other novels I'm sure he's not proud of this one. As much as I've loved his novels in the past, I will be more cautious in the future in investing my time with any new writing. Giving one star is being generous.

I really love to read a Wilbur Smith book
I really love to read a Wilbur Smith book. In his prime his books are top-notch stories which intertwine well-developed characters with a good plot which is historically correct. As he has become much older, however, his books have become disappointing to me. I read them anyway because I'm hopeful and he's a favorite, but they've been books I don't pick up a second time. This book I see has been co-authored and it has some substance to it. Still not the same zip, but it's better than the last few of his. So I enjoyed it... diverse plot, interesting characters and centered in an historic time where so much in the world changed. Read it.

Dedub review of WAR Cry
Mr Smith I can safely say that I have read almost all of your works from ancient Africa to all of the Courtney epics and this is your best Masterpiece by far. From shooting down a German bllimp and falling in love with the parachuting beautiful lady and having a horse loving and jumping daughter who later falls in love with a Luftwaffe pilot she crashes into at the bottom of a wicked sled ride in Switzerland. But then WW 2 erupts and the remainder of this Outstanding masterpiece is an in-depth view of the war from the eyes of the 2 lovers and and their families. Therefore I strongly feel this work of art should be included in high school history classes. Thank you Mr Smith. Outstanding bookving a horse loving daughter who later falls in love with a oLufwtwwwatwbaffe pilot at bottom of a in Switzerland. But then WW 2 Egypt. From on this is an Outstanding chronicle of WAR which I truly believe should become used ln high school history classes. Thank you Mr Smith

The first time I found a Wilbur Smith book was in a hotel gift shop in India over 30 years ago, sat up until 4am reading it and finished it the next night. For years I had to order his books from his publisher in England as they were not available in the US and have read every one of them (over 30) This was one of his best, just wish it had gone on another few hundred pages but will hope for one more sequel to find out what happened next.

A Good Summer Read
Although I have been a WS fan for many, many years, I have been somewhat disappointed in the joint effort books recently. This one, however, is more in the great tradition of his earlier Courtney series. Well told, it moves right along...again a good read. You will recognize the characters and the somewhat "present" time. If you are a fan of WS, this one will not disappoint you. (Not one of the huge best as when WS wrote them all by himself in the early years but quite decent just the same.)

Wilbur Smith has been a favorite author since I saw the movie "Shout at the Devil". I have all but one of his books, I think. I liked this book but it seemed like any real action didn't start till about the last 100 pages and then we are left with a vague ending. I hope there is a sequel to finish this story but it doesn't seem to be his next book.........guess it will be a long wait.

A great follow-up
I loved the book and it followed the previous book Assegai. Now I have to hope the follow-up will come soon.My anticipation for this next book is being tested.I would recommend this series to anyone interested in African history with a great storyline.

Far cry from the usual Wilbur Smith
I have got as far as page 300 and nothing has happened yet! There is a lot of very detailed description of how very rich people lived their lives between the wars, describing their activities in vast detail. And lots of description of the main characters again in vast detail. But these people just go happily about their lives. OK, some have a touch of menace in their character, but they don't do anything menacing. If, like me, you enjoy Wilbur Smith novels for a bit of escapist excitement, drama, heroics, suspense, and lively action, you will, like me, be disappointed. I realise David Churchill "helped" write this, and it's well written and readable, but I can't believe Wilbur Smith himself read the proofs without dozing off halfway through. Anyway, I will read the remaining 200 pages out of sheer determination and will update this review if things get any better!

Pleasantly Surprised
I wasn't going to buy this book after reading the reviews,But took the plunge and was pleasantly surprise .The story moves along nicely , So if you want an easy read then you won't be disappointed. The ending is set up for a follow up book.

I couldn’t put it down
A TERRIFFIC read. Great pace and story. Loved that it was a great follow up to Assegai. Saffron Courtney is a well rounded character and the tense excitement of the pacing jumps off the page. Great references to other Courtney characters from other books which was delightful.I enjoyed this so much I went straight out and bought the just released hardback follow up Courtney’s War which follows on seamlessly and continued in the same vein.Just finished it. Great stuff. I want to read more about these characters because I think their story isn’t over yet.Treat yourself

No more WS
The only other co-written W S book was so badI decided never to read another. I was tempted by War Cry because it was in the Courtney series even though it is co-written. The first three quarters is more like a romantic novle than a WS book containig more sex than is usual in that genre or in other WS books. Not only is it unnecassary it also badly written ( " I want explore you, like Livingstone exploring Africa..." )The main charactrs are beautiful, very intelligant, very rich and brave. The heroine is even more beautiful and does the impossble when it is neccesary. The only redeeming feature is that the remaining 25% of the book is probabley written by WS. There is clearly going to be a sequel but not for me. Why should such a great auther stoop to such a poor book?

Pot boiler
A novel even if its part of a series should be able to stand on its own. This one failed to do so. From almost page one it was clear that the characters were being developed for a big challenge but it failed to materialise instead I felt I was having to wade through a series of minor matters with the odd bit of sex to keep me interested. The result after many years of enjoying a Wilbur Smith I felt disappointed. Mr Smith you can do better than this. Surely your not so short of cash that you have resorted to pot boilers. Peter Allen
