I really like this water mat. I study Chinese in college, and I got it to practice calligraphy so I didn't constantly have to clean up ink every time I wanted to do calligraphy. This mat is great and works great, and I love the practice mats with character outlines on them. Definitely would recommend.The only reason I'm giving four stars instead of five is that, like some other people have said, this mat tends to stain. I let my sister use it and didn't tell her to have a light hand with the water, so now there are big black marks all over it just from one use by someone who didn't really know how to use it. User error, I guess! But still, as a set marketed for beginners, you'd think it would be less prone to staining because not everyone would know how much water to put in the brush.

The paper is great - when wet, it looks just like ink. However, there are no instructions in English and no translation for the characters modeled in the accompanying booklet. The booklet has some instructions on proper brush grip etc but it feels a bit useless if you cannot write Chinese.Note also that the characters modeled in the booklet are traditional, not simplified. They also do not show the brush stroke order.If you are a beginner in Chinese, you should also separately get a method for writing, which shows the brush strokes, because the booklet won't be very helpful.

My mat arrived with a black stain and I don't know if it's supposed to not have an end cap on one of the end pieces but it only has 3 end caps out of 4 corners. Bristles on brush also keep falling out within the first ten minutes of use. Stains showing after wet areas dried. Also do not let anything but soft bristles from running over the surface: my kids were swishing the brush around and created permanent scratch marks from where the plastic handle of the brush scratched it.

Purchased for my son to use with Homeschool. We are studying the Eastern Hemisphere. The packaging wasn't impressive, but the product more than made up for that. It included 3 'sheets' of the rewritable paper, one is a scroll with just the grids. The other two is a sheet to practice the strokes and the other has symbol for you to practice your strokes in. The 'paper' dries pretty quickly at first and the 'ink' completely vanishes. If you use it back to back, it seems to take longer to dry. Very pleased with the product. I only wish it included English translation for the symbols. For homeschool, it's a WIN - easy set up, easy clean up.

It came with the packaging totally smashed, luckily there was no damage to the items in the package. Material is good, the writing brush is good quality.

My daughter loves this product. She enjoys practicing her Chinese characters and the water really looks like ink.

Perfect for a beginner to practice writing Chinese characters using a brush. My 6-year old son likes to doodle On it without making a mess.

I am unable to get a spoon separately such a shame that it is the only kit that you sell that not includes this vital piece of equipment.
