Q: I totally hit buy now before reading deep enough, how bad is swr going to be if used on vhf?

Probably impossible to transmit, I wouldn't even do that testing. You should be able to do some receiving though. You got the antenna, now get an sdr and track flights :)

Q: Will other SMA antennas screw on to this magnetic base, or is the theading different?

I’m not certain, but it seems likely that the antenna to base thread dimensions vary between manufacturers and of course, between different antenna types.

Q: Is this outdoor-rated?

I don't believe the manufacturer rates it or recommends for outdoor use. That being said, it has a plastic base and metal antenna. If you were to seal the coax connections to it and/or protect it from the weather, it might provide acceptable operation outside. I use mine indoors only.
