Handy beginner's guide
I'd give it 5 stars if I were more of a beginner, but since I've been soaping for over 5 years, there's little that I haven't already read or borrowed from our library, still if you need something of your own, on your own virtual bookshelf, for reference whenever it's convenient for YOU, this would be an excellent place to start. Well written, easy to follow guiding steps, and even better you have some basic recipes to try out. Once you've dived into the deep end of soapmaking, you'll get comfortable enough to try your own variations on the basic recipes, just be sure to recalculate the lye amounts when you do. I'd recommend it for anyone who's just starting out in learning about soapmaking or needs to have some helpful hints once they're getting started with the actual creation of their first batches. BEWARE: soapmaking is extremely addictive. You're hooked from the first batch and will never be the same again, but your skin will love you for it if you get the soaps just right!

looks good, but awkward to use
I appreciate the interesting facts the author included because they expand my understanding of soap. The sections on selling soap, going into business, and ingredients labels are very useful and well thought out.The fact that the pages are not numbered compound (of course) by no table of contents makes this book difficult to use. I have gone through and put sticky notes on the edges of the pages. Now I will write numbers on the pages and build a table on contents so I can resource the info. in the book. Since I am a rank beginner, I would like to have all the details of each recipe fully written out rather than to be referred to another section of the book. The ingredient list is on one page and the process used is elsewhere.I still think this book has much to offer. No numbers on the pages brought the rating down.

Ok but not ideal
This book has some good info, but there were sooo many typos and incomplete sentences. For instance, the section about essential oils has a heading for tea tree oil, but no information. Lemon EO supposedly causes โlight sensitivityโ - should be photo-sensitivity which is an important distinction so people donโt get sever sunburns from using products with lemon EO. Some of the process descriptions are too basic or contain urban legend rather than scientific facts. You can probably make decent soap from this book, but it isnโt the best resource out there.

Four Stars
Good book. Great Book. Lots of valuable information for a new do it yourselfer. I love to learn new things and this is something that I really want to learn more about. I want to stop using chemicals and getting more into natural ingredients.

Simple & Easy To Understand
What a wonderful book on soap making! Not only does it give great simple instructions, it also gives an interesting historical accounting of soap and its uses. I loved the many helpful tips along the way, that didn't just say do it this way...but explained why doing it that way worked best. Being that I purchase lots of handmade soaps and appreciate their uniqueness and fragrances, I'm now looking forward to making some of my own. Thanks for all your hard work in putting this together Kelly Kohn! (I also got Kelly's other book Make Your Own Candles The Easy Way) Great value in my opinion!

A nice "History" book
No pictures for "Hands-On" - No "Step-by-Step". - No pictures of actual "Products" to be used, or your "Finished" product.....A nice "History" book. Was going to use this to teach some children "Soap Making" craft...(as we all are learning together). Will keep the book for the history part of it.I'm sorry, I was disappointed with this book.

Very well written with lots of thought!
This is an excellent book for beginners and experienced soap makers alike. It is very informative with lots of info. There are lots of sources for buying soap supplies and using common every day supplies in making your soap. It has a lot of detail and info on using essential oils, herbs and other beneficial things. I would highly recommend this book! It is well worth the money!

Best book I've read on the subject
It's a pity that this isn't a paperback as I'd buy it even though I've read it on Kindle. The author covers the topic of soap-making in an extremely thorough manner, far more so than any other book I've read. She offers information, tips and the benefit of her experience in a very generous manner.I am a newbie to making soap and grateful that she has taken the time to explain things which other people leave out as they assume you know or can work out. Therefore your first foray into soap-making will be successful, safe and enjoyable.Highly recommended.

gifts for all the family
Very easy to understand in some parts, bit more difficult in some part but enjoyed making the soaps as presents.

So so
As much as I have found this an interesting read, I do believe that its aimed at the US market from the spelling and measures.

Interesting book
For me, the lay out didn't really work so I probably won't look at it again. I would have preferred the different processes listed with their recipes rather than all the recipes being at the end.

Not to bad
Its another book that is not to bad but lacking pictures. It would be nice to see the finished product.
