Product description CD > POPULAR MUSIC > LATIN .com Even in the northern states, Mexican music is easy to find on American radio, but airplay almost exclusively consists of the Tex-Mex norteño style. In contrast, there's barely an accordion in earshot on this sparkling collection of traditionally rooted songs. Los Bravos del Norte de Ramon Ayala weigh in with the bouncy ranchera "Andan Dicendo," but on all other fronts guitar trills rather than squeezebox sighs propel the music. With violin swoops and falsetto vocals, La Calaca unleash the galloping son huasteco/ranchera "Rogaciano." The same ensemble graces the gusto "El Tecolote" with less ferocity but equivalent momentum. Los Lobos dip way into their past with a 1977 version of the son jarocho sped up into a self-proclaimed son loco on "Flor de Huevo," complete with dizzying fretwork and a flailing rhythm. The delicate instrumental son istemeno wedding song "Mediu Xhiga" from Dueto de los Hermanos Rios brings exquisitely ornamented requinto guitar from Mexico's Pacific Coast. Rounding out the set is a slice of Latin cabaret complete with braying clarinets and a gritty vocal takeoff on, of all things, a traditional Mexican Christmas carol via Lhasa de Sela's "Los Peces." --Bob Tarte

Mexico by Putumayo World Music
I enjoyed this cd very much. The tracks on this compilation were well-chosen. The beautiful music and melodies allowed me to feel that I was on a musical trip around Mexico. I was also very glad to realize that not all the songs were in Spanish, thus reflecting Mexican ancestry represented by its indigenous culture. The only song I didn't like was the one called "Los Peces." However, my two favorite tracks were "Rogaciano" and "Ranchu Guvina." I recommend this cd to anyone who is interested in exploring the world music genre, or, more specifically, Mexican music.

An Excellent First Introduction to Mexican Music
This CD is a sampler loaded with variety in types of music, performer and mood. It is an eye-opener for those familiar only with the stereotypical unrelentingly brassy sound of Mexican bands that show up in Hollywood movies. It hints at the breadth of music Mexico offers and allows the listener to choose tracks that stand out as worthwhile to follow up by collecting future CDs showcasing individual performers, types of music or both. It is not an ideal purchase for those already steeped in the rainbow variety of Mexican music.

The great mood of Romanic Mexico.
I was really glad I was able to preview this cd before purchasing it for CInco De Mayo. I have many old 78's and 33s from some of the great Mexican singers and band, but this cd hit perfectly for the romantic music of Mexico. I could take it track by track but I will only say that as a whole it was wonderful. With a diverse group of singers and musicians, It brought a perfect Cinco De Mayo flavor with a great Mexican Dinner.

Mexico
This album is really simply amazing. The songs are all very nice and easy to listen to and some of them I can't get out of my head (in a good way.) If you've been to Mexico or are thinking about going, this album is the perfect inspiration or reminder.

fun CD
I like the variety of music on this CD -- nice background when I'm working or cooking or just want to fill the house with music. The mix of soft, slower pieces with get-up-and-dance songs is great.

Good for a fiesta
My wife purchased this for a fiesta party we had. It was great for background music to give that real Mexican feel to the party.

Guter Mix an authentischer Musik

Must-have for Mexican music fans!
It was a present for my Father, who is a die-hard folk music fan, and we all listened to the CD on Christmas Eve. I'm not a fan myself, but have to say the CD contains a representative selection of Mexican music pieces, and almost everyone can find here a song they like, really!

entspannte Musik, autentisch
So stelle ich mir mexikanische Musik vor. Entspannt und bunt finde ich die Mischung. Eine schöne Erweiterung meiner Sammlung von Putumayo.
